All-Season Tires for For Ranger (P225/70R15)
« on: October 20, 2011, 05:21:37 pm »
Hello!

I just recently bought some winter tires, and need to think about summer tires, as my OE tires are now done.  I'm wondering if anyone has good suggestions for a summer tire.  I will be mostly city/highway driving, no offroad, save for some dirt trails.  Is it worth it to get summer versus all-season tires for 3-season use only?

I've looked around, but can only find one true summer tire for my size:

The General Grabber UHP

Any other suggestions out there?

thanks!

The perennial favourite is the Michelin LTX M/S.

On a ranger I wouldn't bother getting a summer tire.  You'd just be replacing them sooner since those General's have a treadwear rating of 360.

OK - good to know.

If it will be all-seasons, I've also looked at:

General Grabber HTS, since it has a treadwear rating of 640.  ($147 ea.)

Bridgestone Dueler H/T (treadwear 460) ($129 ea.)

Goodyear Wrangler SR-A (treadwear 500) ($106 ea - sale)

The Michelin LTX are $148 ea.

I understand that treadwear isn't the only thing to look for, though my style of driving is not aggressive.  Not sure how else to differentiate though, apart from price.  I'd rather spend a little extra and have my tires last two extra seasons, obviously.

Looks like Consumer Reports in Nov 2008 recommends the General Grabber HTS....although your price seems somewhat pricey.

Here's a review by CR on SUV/truck tires (all season, all terrain, winter truck, etc):

The winter truck tire list is somewhat dated...DM-Z3 and X-Ice are now discontinued.

You can never go wrong with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, look awesome and perform even better.

The Duratracs do look great, but are more aggressive than I need.  Thanks for the tip.

I'll do some looking around for a better deal on the Generals.  Now that they've been recommended, they've probably decided to price them as such.

Of that list you provided, doing the kind of driving your doing, I'd go with the Goodyear SR-A's. They came standard on my 2009 Ranger Sport and have held up quite well.

I know many like those big chunky white labelled Cowboy tuff tyres.....
but for a wee Ranger a decent all season CAR/Truck rated tyre (Heaven FORBID) will do just fine and give you a quieter smoother ride into the BARGAIN Prices u will pay..............have Hankooks( $400/4) on my '97 2WD Ranger and Nordic Winters (likewise $400/4)..............

It is better to LOOK GOOD than ride Good eh!!!

now if yer driving to yer Montana Ranch in mud season.....  INVITE ME ALONG...i'm good fer a 3Pak.... ;D....1 fer U 2 fer ME
