Will changing my transmission fluid be beneficial for a vehicle I hope to keep for a long time?

If you switch to a quality synthetic, your car will shift like butter=less friction.  Definitely a good thing.

Yes & No. In a manual some level of friction is required to allow the synchronizers to work properly. Too slippery a lubricant make for hard shifting as well by not allowing the synchronizers to slow down the gear for proper engagement which can increase wear on the synchonizer itself. Most of time it is better to stick with the factory specifications for manual tranny lubricants.

I have yet to see a manual tranny fluid THAT slippery.  Most fluids meet manufacturer specifications.  There are several people here who have switched to RP on my recommendation and are shocked by the difference.

If I went with the synthetic royal purple what would happen if another brand\type got mixed in with it?  I.E. The dealer topping up the transmission fluid with whatever brand\type they use?

Nothing.  Synthetics are compatible with non-synthetics.

What fluid does GM recommend for your car?

In my experience dealers will only top up or change oil in manual transmissions if they are asked to or if a seal leaks. Leaking seals are pretty rare in MT.

Yea...and usually the only way to check is to pop the fill hole off and stick your finger in.  Your finger is the dipstick.

So it takes automatic transmission fluid in your manual tranny car, eh?  I've seen that a few times...
