after market toys...
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:10:25 am »
recently purchased a 2001 honda prelude that comes with a few aftermarket toys!!

i have no clue what the benefits are of having them and how to take advantage of their intended use....  i could have googled them, however i am think'n the best place to go for advice is canadiandriver.ca for obvious reasons....

i actually attempted to upload pix, however file exceeded limit....

i have two guages by auto meter...  sport comp oil pressure guage and an air fuel ratio guage!!

it's quite obvious if the oil pressure guage hits zero and stays there... i got huge problems, however what number represents normal and when is a number too high and should be considered a warning for a potential major problem???

as for the air fuel guage... it looks more like a strobe light!! again quite obvious if the guage stays in the red for a prolonged period of time... i have a huge problem!!  curious to know if i should be looking for some meaning as it bounces back and forth from red, yellow and green????

i also have an MSD blaster 2 ignition the previous owner gave me (not installed) and curious to know if this is worthy of an install or just leave the ignition alone????

thanks again for your posts and opinions!!!

cheers....

Air fuel gauge.    As a 2001 your car is a closed loop emission system and should have OBDII and 2 oxygen sensors one each side of the catalytic converter.    The pre-cat sensor does ALL the air fuel ratio sensing that you will ever need, it feeds back to the injection system and the air flow sensor to determine the correct ratio, and the other one will tell you, via the check engine light, if the cat is not working or , indirectly, if the pre cat sensor is bad. ( which of course will have been detected already.)

The air/fuel ratio sensor. I wonder where it is connected. I'll guess: it is connected to the pre-cat oxygen sensor and is directly reading that sensors measurement  of the excess oxygen in the exhaust....which is a nice solid signal, easy to convert into coloured lights.

They usually have their own sensor.  They go in the pipe just downstream of the main O2 sensors.  Odd for that car to have one unless it was boosted in a previous life.  On a non boosted/non tuned car, an A/F gauge is good for nothing.
