Car Alarms to stop Vandalism?
« on: October 05, 2011, 08:58:49 pm »
I bought my first car this year, and am having a lot of trouble with vandalism. It's not a new car, but the previous owner kept it in good shape. Someone is repeatedly taking a screwdriver to the panels, windows, even the license plate.  I'm not sure if this is occurring at home in the driveway or in a city lot.  I'm wondering about a basic alarm system and could use some suggestions. Should I be looking at a capacitance alarm? The local suppliers (custom shops/box stores) gave quite a range of quotes.

I don't think an alarm will do anything.  They'll scrape the side of the car, and then the alarm goes off.  You still have the scrape, and now have to shut an alarm off.

I think a better option would be to have a motion detector camera (like a game trail camera) pointed at your car where it's parked at night so it can snap a pic of whoever is defacing your car.

Not sure if you have any other options.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

A car alarm with a proximity sensor is an option. But they can be highly irritating since any motion too close to the car can set them off.

Still, it might stop them from getting close. A regular alarm or a camera doesn't prevent the damage from occurring it the first place.

If it's indeed repeatedly happening I'd say you or your car are specifically targeted. I bet there's one rotten kid in your neighbourhood that's either bored or has some beef with you.
Good idea about the trail camera, but as soon as the flash goes off you might be missing a trail camera too.

BTW, if you catch him, I'm nearby and can give you a hand hiding the body.

Last month I chased someone out of a neighbours car, so it maybe related to that. I was wondering about a vehicle DVR camera with motion detect, but most of them seem rather iffy. I will have to look at trail cameras. Is Norton's still a good place in Kingston to get something installed or would Best Buy be just as good and cheaper?

Yup, I bet it's the guy you chased off.
I haven't had any work like that done in years.  Norton's used to be The place, is it even still open?
Future Shop used to supposedly have a  good tech, last name of Sisson? Sissle? Something. Dunno if he's still there.

There's a local Kingston area forum for asking such questions.

Around Kingston it'd get stolen too and end up in a dog fighting ring.

I've heard good things about Auto Add Ons. They're prices aren't bad, either... I think I was quoted about $300 a couple years ago when I was thinking of a car alarm.

I know from experience that car alarms don't deter vandalism. Theft? Possibly, but vandalism no.
