Selling a BC car in alberta
« on: October 03, 2011, 09:14:14 pm »
I put my van in my girlfriends name, shes in New Brunswick and she told me to get rid of our van. 97 Astro 334k kms. I want to trade it in with a dealership. What do I need to do to be able to sell it here?

Make sure the gas tank is full.  :)

Seriously though, if that van had an Alberta registration is would be worth $100 to a dealership. If it has a BC registration it is worth less than $0 to a dealership. In order to register that vehicle in Alberta it must pass an Out of Province Inspection. At 14 years old and 334k kms that is likely to require much more than $100 in repairs.

Just take it to wrecker and take what they give you for it.

Ford's giving you UP TO $3000 on your junker - but you have to have had it licensed/insured for 6 months I think...maybe you qualify. (see article on front pg of main site)

$500 starting trade, but if your car is worth less than $0, then you'll get the $500, but have less room on the price.  Either way, you get nothing for such a trade.
No place I'd rather be...

Out of province with that kind of mileage it is only worth money for parts or scrap sadly.

If it is your girlfriend's name just get her to make out a bill of sale to you just in case. Likely it won't matter though.

Actually the amount you receive under that program just depends on what you are buying, not on the actual value. For example, buy a Fiesta and get $500; buy an F-350 and get $3000.

But yes, there are requirements for registration, names must match, etc.

The car has to be licensed OR insured for the last three months (not both).  Also, I don't think that participating in the Recycle Your Ride program has any impact on price negotiation, since it is funded by Ford not the dealership.
