Gislaved NordFrost 5 vs Toyo Observe GSi5... Opinions?
« on: October 03, 2011, 11:57:39 am »
Getting a set of winter tires and steelies for our new CRV and am debating between these two brands:

Gislaved NordFrost5 - http://www.gislaved-tires.com/generator/www/com/en/gislaved/automobile/themes/pc_tyres/winter/nord_frost_5/overview_nf5_en.html
Toyo Observe GSi5 - http://www.toyotires.ca/tire/pattern/observe-gsi5

I currently have the Gislaveds on my P5 and have been happy with them, but have heard great things about the Toyos.  Plus, Toyo has a rebate which brings the pricing to the same level.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts/opinions on these two sets.

What I can tell you for sure is that Gisalved tires are real quality products. As for Toyo, I've heard good reviews, but I also heard bad ones. I would stick to Gisalved if I were you.

Thanks.  I think that's the way I'm leaning right now. Why mess with a good thing? :)

Also, I've read some more reviews and apparently the Toyos are pretty noisy.

The NordFrost 5 is the best winter tire I've ever used, period. In terms of traction in all conditions, wear characteristics, noise, etc., I've yet to find a tire that competes. The Dunlop Graspic DS3 is pretty nice, but I'll definitely be sticking with the Gizlaveds.

I ran NordFrost 5's a few years ago for a little over one winter season. They were good in wintry conditions. I only got rid of them because of the bad luck I just happened to have with my particular set (puctures straight through due to road debris). If you're happy with your current set of NordFrost 5 and they are well priced, why not get them again?

Well, I ordered the Gislaveds again for the CRV.  As I mentioned, I've been happy with them for the P5, so I'm sticking with 'em.

Pick them up on the weekend and will likely put them on early November.

I have Toyo Observe G-02 Plus, I don't like them. I don't mind the noise which is really just white noise, but the snow and ice traction is merely adequate. I'm kicking myself for not getting the Yokohama iceGuard iG20s that I really liked.

Funny, those are the two winter tires I have... IG20's on the Sonata, and G02+ on the Sportage. I really liked the G02+ the first couple of winters, but then deep snow performance started to suffer. I've only had the IG20 for one winter, so the jury's still out on them.

I went 5 winters with the G02+ on the Sportage, and really, I should've replaced them after the 4th winter. Their performance wasn't very good the last winter. I'm in the process of purchasing Michelin X-Ice 2's for the Sportage. I'm hoping they serve me better than the G02+ have.

I have the Nordfrost 5 on the GTI ( IN 205/55 16 SIZE).   They are OK but I will probably replace them with Blizzaks or Xice2 when they are down one more winter.

I have the Toyo Observe G-02 Plus and used them for 3 winters.  Excellent tires, the best I have driven on, including the X-ice.  The noise level is much the same as the Michelin LX4 all season that is stock on my car - quiet.

I think the Observe G-02 Plus has been replaced by the Observe GSi5 for this winter, so it should be an even better tire.
