1987 VW Scirocco
« on: October 01, 2011, 05:03:07 pm »
hey guys,

My cousin is looking at buying this car for $1800.00. As the title suggests it is a 1987 VW Scirocco.

He says its mint ad runs great.  Do you guys know if these things are well known for any troubles, in any way?  I'm trying to help him out.

Let me know if you guys know anything about this car in general!

Cheers
AC

*edited for clarity (and again to spell the darned car right in the title)*

I've always liked them but they were a tight fit for someone tall like me.

If it is really mint mechanically and body-wise, I would buy it.

Despite VWs not being up to Asian cars (so they say), I'd still buy one; my next car will be a VW.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

My brother had a 1984. It didn't hold up to hooning very well. Handled good for it's day. Around the 87 model VW started introducing the 16V. Is this one a 16V?

More power. The earlier 8V only made around 90HP IIRC. 16V bumped this into triple digits.

Great older find if you're handy with spinning your own wrenches, a must-stay-away if you would pay for someone to fix.

123 bhp in Canada, 132 in EU.    I had a 1987 GTI with that engine.

^Absolutely.  Always liked those cars.

As in any car that old the condition can vary quite a bit.
Look for rusty strut  towers. Actually, look for rust everywhere.
Rusty brake and fuel lines are to be expected.
Anything rubber is suspect of now being too hard or too soft.
Plastic tanks on cooling system will blow apart as soon as they are stressed. (Saw a 1986 M6 do that last Sunday)
Look for wiring that's rotting away or eaten by rodents.

Overall this generation of VW's tend to be reliable beasties but buyer beware on this one for sure! $1800 sounds on the low end of nice, so I'd have it checked out before buying. It is after all a 24 year old car now and they were favourites for the kids to play with.

Make sure when/if the timing belt was changed, 16v motors are paperweights when those let go.

RUST, check for it, then check again. That is far from the original colour, I would be extremely leary of bondo and other cover-up techniques applied when it was painted.

Make sure your cousin is mechanically competent and knows a little about Mk1/Mk2 VW's. Buy a service manual. Bringing this beast to a mechanic will cause heart palpitations, especially when it comes to fuel injection issues!
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.
