I just purchased a set of 4 x 205/50TR15 winter tires to replace my Nokian Hakkepeliitta RSis which have seen 4 winters of service on my 2007 Mazda 3 Sport GT.  These will go on my new 2011 Mazda3 Sport GT.

Some reviews:

My Conti ExtremeWinterContact tires are $250 ea at Canadian Tire, and I purchased them for $171 ea (not incl. tax) w/ free shipping from 1010tires.com.  My whole order, taxes in was $CDN 777.39 taxes in.  On the face of it, they look to be less expensive at TireRack since they’re $129 each at TireRack but by the time you factor in duty, shipping and brokerage fees they end up $50 more (on the total order) than I purchased them for.

Overall, I was very impressed with the staff at 1010tires as they followed up very promptly with an issue I was having when ordering on the site and made sure I was looked after.

These will be going on some replica 17x6.5" Mazda6 rims that the Nokians are currently mounted on.
Opinions are like noses; everyone has one.

We bought 2 cars.  A 2012 Audi Q5 2.0T Premium and a 2011 Mazd3 Sport GT.   :bounce:

We haven't decided what winter boots to put on the Audi.  They want over $2000 at the dealer for a package which includes alloy rims and no name Italian brand winter tires (not Pirelli) so I'm just starting to look for them for that vehicle.

Tirerack only goes down to 17" for the minus sizes.  The standard size for our Q5 is 235/60/18.  Same size as our recently replaced Hyundai Santa Fe on which we had -2 sized 235/70/16s on steelies for the winter.  It's worth asking the dealer, especially since the Q5's chassis is based on the A4....not a big car.

Good idea.  Thanks.

Those Contis helped tame the G8 GT last year. I was able to punch through the Rockies with them during a trans Canada snowfall closure. They are good.

Good to hear!  For years I have been a card-carrying member of the lunatic fringe group called drivers of cars equipped with Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tires.  They used to be hands-down the best winter tires out there but then again the gene pool was a lot shallower 20 years ago when I got my first set.  Now there are so many really good players in the market as the consumer has finally discovered the goodness of winter tires and supply has increased with the demand.

I'm looking forward to a change (and not incidentally to save a few $$!) and all the reviews including yours and aquadorhj's have been very positive.  They meet two other criteria of mine....they are not no-name, and they are recent technology.

Another poster here calling for your review on this rubber once the snow flies - especially interested in hearing your thoughts compared to the Nokians.  Tirerack thinks those Contis are fantastic (as do most of the private reviews), and I was REAL close to pulling the trigger on them this spring.  But went with the Blizzaks once again...

..SO those CONTI's are ONLY good in EXTREME WINTER.... :stick: >:D.......

Got a demo set of Winter rims for Mrs Saf's new Veloster  and wanted
those Conti extremes...didn't come in 205/55/16 (-2 sizes from Summers) DAMN...same for the Pilot Alpine PA3's both TOP rated....
so I am mulling over these three....Altimax Artics the cheapest by $50 a tyre,Blizzak WS70's (Tyre life? Ride on smooth road?) and Michelin Xice X'2's   Both same price...but Michelin had 60K wear warranty (lots of conditions :'() and good dry road and quieter running...with good ice and  grip in moderate depth snow ;conditions we get here is SW Ontario.leaning to them for late Oct install..............

Having gone through close to 10 sets of winter tires, I do believe these guys has a point on aquaplaning and slushplaning http://www.nokiantires.com/slushplaning-testing-US . My family tries to avoid extreme driving conditions like Freezing Rain-you need a Zamboni . We have never head straight into a snow storm either- well we actually hit one on the way back from Toronto so we pulled into a motel parking lot before our car got stuck .  Not that I will always stick with Nokians, but if it costs about the same then its a no brainer! Like $25 a tire( across the border of course)

@allmango:  It should be interesting to see how the Contis perform.  I've had Hakka NR-09, 10, 1, 2, NRV, NRH, SUV, and RSis over the years so have sipped from the Nokia (now Nokian) koolaid big time.  I've also had good experience with the original Michelin X-Ice, terrible experience with others, and have always come back to the Nokians.  I find the Nokians to be very expensive and while I've been willing to pay the premium up to now because of a demonstrable (to me) difference in performance, I think that not only has the performance gap been closed, but some of the other players have tires that might even be technically superior to the Nokians.

So....expect a reasonably objective test series from me, starting with first impressions and then some thoughts about the tires mid- and late-season.  I think the very fact that I'm switching from the Nokians underlines objectivity on my part.  While I am an engineer, I'm not a tire engineer so we'll see how it goes!  The experience of a couple of forum members have boosted my confidence in my purchase but only experience will tell.  This is uncharted territory for me, going from that famous Finnish brand to a German brand.  ;-)

FWIW, here's my mini-review on the Hakks on both our Hyundai and the Mazda:  http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,56705.0.html  It should be noted that the Hakka RSis easily lasted 4 winters and the Hakka SUVs might very well have lasted 5 or 6 but I'll never know since I've sold the vehicle and they likely won't fit (they're 16") on the new Q5 unless 16" rims will fit on it.

I also used Conti ExtremeWinterContact on my Volvo XC60 last winter and it rides great. We didn't have lots of snow last year at the west coast so I can't comment on the snow handling but highway and street driving are great, the tires are quiet with good traction in rain. We have more slushy snow and rain in Vancouver and Conti performs better under these conditions according to most of the review.
