New winter tires for Sportage
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:35:17 am »
I've already gone 5 winters on my Toyo's G02+ for the Sportage, and while I haven't done the quarter/cariboo test, I'm pretty sure it's time for another set. I need to confirm this (tires are in storage), but I believe their size is 215/65R/16. The Toyo's did a decent job, but I'm looking for something else, something better in snow. I really like the Yoko's IG20 that I've bought for my Sonata, so would that be a good option for a vehicle as tall as the Sportage? I don't see why not, right? If not, what about the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70? We're moving soon and will do quite a bit more highway driving, so I really need something that's good on ice roads. Any suggestions?

I have the IG20's on the Forester during the Winter.  I have no complaints with them.  They're wearing quite well too after 3 Winters, still lots of life in them.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards getting a set of IG20's for the Sportage. It might get confusing with having the same winter tires for both our vehicles, though, with only a slight difference in size (215/60R16 for the Sonata, and 215/65R16 for the Sportage).

I called my Kia dealership and they're offering me the IG20's for 152$+tx mounted/balanced/installed, compared to 170$+tx for the WS70's. They both have a mail-in rebate of around 60$ for a set.

Before I do anything, I need to get my winter tires from storage and see if I can use them another winter... if not, I'll order new ones sometime late October or early November.

Cotsco has the WS70's for $160+Tax installed.  They're offering a $70 rebate at the moment so that' s $142.50 + Taxes installed.

Hard to argue with that.

Also, don't order too late.  It might be hard to find your size.

Throwing aside the money involved, are the WS70 really any better than the IG20? From what I've read on 1010Tires, the IG20's have much better reviews (and more of them) than the WS70's...

I presume the WS70 is new, hence the lack of reviews.

Would it be any better?  I dunno.  I bet it would at least be as good.  And it would be $40 cheaper.

It came in third but it appears it was a really close contest amongst the top 3.

The Continental ExtremeWinterContact (why doesn't Conti use spaces?) was a really good performer for me last winter. They had a good rebate last year too.

Well, not really... I was quoted 152+tx installed by my dealership for the Yoko IG20's, plus there's a 60$ mail-in-rebate with that... so essentially, 156$ including taxes. Compared to your WS70 at 163$ including taxes and rebate. Very comparable, but the WS70's are not cheaper than the IG20...  ;)

Ahh - Misread the bit on the rebate for the Yokos.

Honestly, either way you can't go wrong.

There's also the Generals for $130 + taxes - just to muddle things even more.

I have been shopping for  the 215/65/16 and pondering on a weekend drive to Syracuse. Xice Xi2 or WS70 are both priced $490.00 plus installation .The Hakka R and WRG2 seems competitive at $600.00 plus instal! Ottawa dealer wants $240.00 each!

I just ordered 225/65R16 WS70 from CostCo and it came to $650 including mounting and tax.

You should feel privileged! Costco would NOT sell us tires for our IS300 when we tried to buy some.  They told us they could not sell us tires because the speed rating on the winter tires was different from the speed rating on the OEM summer tires.  No kidding...really?  ::)

That was the last time we ever tried to buy tires in Canada....

Yeah with Costco sometimes you have to lie. I bought snow tires for a Ridgeline RT when I own an EX-L....

Alright, called back my dealership to order the tires and turns out they made a mistake previously... they're now quoting me $786 installed for the Yokohama IG20's. That's more than I was hoping to pay.

I just noticed that the General Altimax Arctic are 25% off at Canadian Tire right now... they're normally $170 each, now only $127. Are they good tires? As we're moving soon, my wife will be doing more highway driving with the Sportage for her commute, so I need great tires for high speed cruising, that means good performance on ice, slush and low noice if possible. Do the Artic's fit that bill?

I tested mine on the first 5k. Ice was good, excellent on slush, noise was moderate. Little noticeable treadwear. Handling was a little squishy but then again I was running a 75 series sidewall (remember when this ratio was the norm?).

Hmm... so a set of Artics at CT for around $640 installed, or a set of WS-70's at Costco for around $725 installed? The Blizzak's also have a $60 mail-in-rebate at the moment... basically, both options are at the same price.

So... WS70's or Altimax Artics? Again, I need good highway performance, so that's ice, slush, noise and wear).

Don't forget to add ~$20 per tire for balancing.  :P

There is a Crappy Tire in almost every town in Canada.  Not many Costco stores.  Some food for thought regarding road hazard warranty.

Yes, picking a tire that's widely available is a consideration of mine. I never want to be stuck on my donut tire for a few weeks while waiting for a replacement tire to come... that happened to me with I had a flat on a Kuhmo tire I had ordered from Tire Trends a few winters ago. Never again.

I went with DM-V1 (similar to the WS-70?) over the Arctics just to try something new. FWIW I would rather go to a Costco than Crappy tire if I ever needed road hazard service. Costco is excellent. CT is  one step above slime. YMMV.
