Saudi woman sentenced to 10 lashes for driving car

Quote
CAIRO, Egypt — A Saudi woman has been sentenced to be lashed 10 times with a whip for defying the kingdom's prohibition on female drivers, the first time a legal punishment has been handed down for a violation of the longtime ban in the ultraconservative Muslim nation.

Normally, police just stop female drivers, question them and let them go after they sign a pledge not to drive again. But dozens of women have continued to take to the roads since June in a campaign to break the taboo.

Making Tuesday's sentence all the more upsetting to activists is that it came just two days after King Abdullah promised to protect women's rights and decreed that women would be allowed to participate in municipal elections in 2015. Abdullah also promised to appoint women to a currently all-male advisory body known as the Shura Council.

10 lashes just for getting behind the wheel. Not speeding, not failing to stop..driving. Maybe this is planned for version 2 of the Tory crime bill?

I've been to Cairo before.  The drivers there are the worst I've ever seen in my life.  Crazy, dangerous, no-rule-unbroken driving.  Sounds to me like they could use a few women drivers...

But women can't possibly be good drivers!! You let them out of the house on their own and their mind will be so consumed by all the sins they are going to commit (without a male to control them) that they will surley crash due to lack of concentration. Cell phones and texting pale as distrations compared to the evil thoughts of an unacompanied woman.  :rofl2:

That's why in Saudi Arabia, the women aren't allowed out on their own.

I took a long shared taxi ride in Egypt down half the length of the country. There's a reason the horn is nicknamed 'the Egyptian Brake Pedal' in that part of the world.

But most third world countries are pretty bad.

I see they're still in the dark ages.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Just look at some of the technicalities you can use to get off with in that part of the world.
