A 5 door Focus RS/Golf R would get my attention.

Its the added practicality of having 4 doors and a hatch that actually had me looking seriously at getting this era STI. In the event that it changes to its own separate car (which is what everyone seems to be talking about) and a 2 door hatch at that, I wanted to make sure I got MY STI before that happened. Don't get me wrong, Im sure it will be a sexy beast and more true to sport mentality (maybe better balanced and everything) and Im sure it will please MANY people. But for me, I need a practical car, one with some space for work gear, scuba gear, people, maybe children (oh my god I must be drunk).  The 2012 will be identical but: A) I found my deal and went with it.... B) IF the WRX/STI turns out to be something that is not a good fit for not only me... but the masses (and/or Subie purists) then there COULD be a rush on for the 2012's as the last remaining "good" Subies.

Who knows.... Im sure the next ones will have me drooling.... but for now. It offered everything I could want in a car. I started with an '07 baseline Impreza and loved it. Got my '09 WRX and loved it still.... thought... 'Why would anyone ever want to spend the extra money on an STI ?! '   Then I drove it !!  :)

Again, agree with all the points.  In the 1.5 years I have had my car I can claim these facts:

-carried home 12' pieces of lumber
-carried home 600lbs + worth of ikea furniture in one load (including 8'X4' boxes)
-has been tracked on a drag strip, oval, short track and road course
-took 4 people to Grove city, PA for the weekend and brought back all their purchases
-drives through 2 feet of snow, for fun
-been on two different 5000KM+ road trips in a 7 day span
-carried home 200lbs of loose river rock
-gets ~ 24MPG on average
-has a decent sounds to it (ok, that is personal preference)

You would be hard pressed to show me many other cars that do all of that - A4 Avant Maybe?

Yes, GREAT list Mike.

The face and dash materials must keep the riff-raff out.   ;D

Do these really fit?  Any pics?

Reason I ask is that the pole I use for rig shots is 10ft, and only just fits in my SUV.

Yep... it's tough to beat the combination of practicallity, performance, and all weather fun offered by the WRX and STI. It's pretty much the swiss army knife of cars. :)
