Covered Under Warranty Or No?
« on: September 21, 2011, 01:36:42 pm »
Today, I had to take the Edge out and take a bunch of recyclables back.  It's the first time I've driven the Edge in probably about 1.5 months.  I didn't even get out of the driveway and I knew there was something wrong.  Lots of grinding coming from the driver's side rear wheel.....which I automatically knew what it was.  I took a quick look and could easily tell the brake pad is completely gone and the rotor is in pretty rough shape.  The pads and rotors on the other three wheels appear to be just fine.  So since the Edge is only 9 months old with 15K KMs on it, I am wondering if this will be covered under warranty?  I would certainly think that it should be given how new the vehicle is and this is definitely not typical wear.  Thoughts?  Cord, any thoughts from you?

Brake pads and rotors are a wear item and are not normally covered, but this sounds like a stuck caliper which IMHO should be covered.  Of course they could just say someone left the parking brake on and that's why it's worn (if it's the same pads).

First thing I would do is check the warranty documentation to see whether the warranty covers problems with non-covered items caused by covered items.  Sounds as though something that might be covered by warranty is causing your rotor / brake pad issue.

Oh, I'm completely aware that pads/rotors are wear items that are typically not covered under warranty.  This situation is a little different and is not exactly typical wear.  I agree that a stuck caliper is more than likely the culprit.

Look to see if there are any service bulletins out on brakes for the Edge.
When I had the RX-8 there was an issue with the brakes squeeking due to pad issues and also another bulletin on rusting rotors and thusly Mazda changed out the pads/shims/rotors more than once on my car.
If it's happening on your car, it's likely happening on others. ;)

Hmm...FordEdgeForum says the parking brake has it's own drum system...so I don't think that's a cause of it.  I'd also tend to go to the dealer and give them a chance to fix it...they might just do it regardless of the letter of the contract.

If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

I just called our local dealership and was able to speak with the shop foreman.  I described to him the issue and he agreed that it's probably a stuck caliper.  When I told him that the vehicle is only 9 months old he said it would be covered under warranty no question about it.  Phew!  :)   It's going in to get fixed tomorrow.

On a side note, I asked my wife how long she's been hearing the grinding noise.  She said for over a month now.  Sigh!  LOL

Glad the news was positive.

A couple weeks ago I drove my wife's car on a 30 degree day. When I got back I asked her since when did the A/C stop working. She said, "I thought it seemed a little warm."  :)

That's good news.  The exact same thing happened to our friend's new Caravan back in July.  It was only a few months old, and it got covered under warranty as well.

A month?  Oops....

Off-topic:  But why does it seem like most woman are like this?

My g/f told me there was something wrong with the alternator (well it was making a funny noise).  I could barely hear the thing, so I humoured her and she was right.  She makes me take the car around the block every month since she thinks something changed.

How could you drive a month with a squealing brake and not check it?

It often seems it's one extreme or the other, noticing things that are barely perceptible (or not there), or not ever seeing all the flashing lights and smoke.  ;D

My dad's mate's wife didn't change the oil in her car for about 5 years, came out like treacle!

That part (ie, wife)
is definitely not under warranty...

Too bad George isn't still the shop foreman there (he retired a couple of years ago); I spent most nights of my teenage years in his garage at home helping him.

Cars are a funny thing. If you drive them you have to fix things. If you don't drive them for a while you will still get problems.
