Be wary of lug centric steelies.
« on: September 21, 2011, 11:26:27 am »
Tis the winter tire shoppiong season for keeners. I have come across some great price on steel wheels but once I drill down into the spercs they always seem to be lug centric. Not worth the potential issues. Look for OEM hub centric for you steelies. YMMV.

Or yer local wrecker.  Cheaper than steel, look a billion times better too.

Really?  I went to look there once for the P5...and found these guys recognize the value of them.

That's what we did.
Running WRX alloys on the Outback for the winter, I think they set us back $120.  They aren't the prettiest, but they are straight and hold air.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Costco has lug centric steelies new for ~$45.00. The installer said sometimes they work fine, sometimes they don't. I'm thinking of putting my winter tires on the stock rims and then getting aftermarket rims for the summers in the spring.

I dunno. I've used them a number of times over the years without issue. I must be living right. :)

I just picked up some OEM 18's for my car, for $400.  They are immaculate!  They guy even polished and waxed them for me!

Well my choice is getting simple. No generic steelies available for Ridgeline (17"). Honda OEM Alloy-look steels for $110

fantastic deals!!!

i've looked for some oe 18" for the bimmer, and people want outrageous money (like more than a grand for just the wheels, no tires)

on topic, i've never actually had lug centric wheels before.  i've always known they COULD be problematic if not used with the right hub rings..   canadian tire actually sells some hub rings, though.

I've had multiple sets of lug centric wheels and never had a problem.  When the car is off the ground, tighten the nuts, and then give it a final torque when its on the ground.  Everything is even steven.

I bought 16" steelies from Costco last year for $39 each.  Hub centric, lug centric, no centric, for that price it doesn't matter.

OE steels for the Corolla were about $60 each!  Why bother with non-OE at that price?

The Subaru OE steels were actually not much more.  Shocking, considering how Subaru likes to price it's parts.

The Mercedes  steels from the dealer were $175 each, a total rip-off.  I bought some take-off OE alloys instead for less.
