Importing car question
« on: September 19, 2011, 09:41:41 pm »
Guys,

My wife's uncle in NYC wants to sell us his 2000 BMW 323i for only 1500$.

I have seen conflicting answers on this website.
I realise I will have to pay duty, taxes and the RIV ammounts.

However, what I can't seem to find a strait answer to is this: will they tax me on the value of the car (as per red book) or the sales amount??

Thanks for your help.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think they would charge you sales tax based on the sales price or the Red Book value, whichever is greater.

A BMW 323 may also be subject to the 6.1% import duty, and I think sales taxes are charged on the product of the sales price times the duty rate.

But if you want straight answers, why don't you phone the CBSA office at the port of entry you plan to use and ask them.

When I brought my S2000 across, I had to pay duty, RIV fee and taxes on the sale price.

When you get to paying the provincial part of the HST they will charge on the higher of the Redbook and the sale price ( converted into $Cdn) + the duty.

I think that your wifes uncle  ( uncle in law?) should get the recall letter from BMW USA  for you and maybe even have the local dealer turn on the DRLs.   The idea being to get through the examination in Canada without involving BMW Canada.

ABS, brake, oil sensors are all on bum at different time, lights come on /off at different times, the Indy says everything is fine but the
sensors are no good, not worth it to replace them

The car is a 2000 so out of warranty which means with his US BMW recall letter he can go anywhere (Canadian Tire) for his RIV inspection.
