Pricing used tires?
« on: September 19, 2011, 02:33:27 am »
I've got a set of 4 195/55-16 Dunlop Wintersport 3D runflats on 16x6.5 Rial Milano rims with 433mhz TPMS sensors off our wrecked Cooper S I need to sell. I'm wondering what would be a reasonable price to look for on Kijiji? The tires are two seasons old and have about 6500 kms on them.

Depends on tread depth. Really bugs me when an ad reads 75% tread, usually equates to about 50% useable tred. . A tire is toast at 4/32 (IMO). A tread may start at 10 or 11/32.  There is only 6/32 of useable tread.  1-2/32 missing is 75% in my eyes.

Most people overvalue used wares. List them at 50-percent of today's average new price, plus 10-percent for negotiating wiggle room.

Many sellers omit vital ad info. Look up the manufacturer's specs and list them, including wheel offset, bolt pattern etc. Research and list other cars they'll fit. if any. It will cut down on the morons asking if they'll fit an Escalade. Include at least a half-dozen good clear photos taken with a real camera - not a cellphone. If you have a photo of your car with them on it, include it. Get a $5 Canadian Tire depth gauge and include the tread depth. If a wheel has curb rash, say so.

Don't agree to a lower price over the phone or by e-mail. Suggest the person look at them first. Less chance of getting double-whammied on the price.

Advertise early. Be patient. October is the month for selling used winter tires. If the ad doesn't work after 10-days, reword and re-post.

Depends how badly you want to get rid of them.

I just picked up a set of General Artics that had one season of light use for $200 (on steelings).  No more than $600 if you want to actually sell them, since they`re aluminum wheels.

A friend just picked up some used winters on steelies for $400.  They were 17" but not too big, one season on them.  I would hope you get bit more as they are on alloys.  Try for $600, sell 'em for  $500 if you get an offer would be my suggestion
