GLK Winter Time
« on: September 18, 2011, 10:39:32 pm »
Despite the stock tires actually being "Snowflake Rated", I have decided to get a set of winters. The stock tires are 20s on gorgeous (imho) AMG rims so that's part of the decision too.

Apparently Canadian GLKs do not have TPMS but rather just some sort of ABS wheel speed sensor thing. Hooray!

Anyone have opinions on the following tires?
WS70
W300 Icebears
Pirelli Scorpions
Falken Eurowinter HS439

My trusted local guy has prices that basically match Tirerack USD for CAD, but more convenient given that he includes installation etc.

FYI, anyone in western Canada, 1010tires has a free shipping up to $85 promo right now.

I've heard nothing but good reviews about Michelin X-Ice2.

Or, how about Dunlop Winter Sport 3D?  =)

I had the Icebears on my BMW and they worked well for me...but aren't they superseded now by a new one?  I*PIKE or a name like that.

Icebears are a older design. I would look at Pirelli Ice and Snow or perhaps the Blizzack DM-V1

I have the Dunlops for both the Z4 and TSX and like them, but they don't seem to be available in the size I need.

ktm: any particular need to go with a specific "light truck" tire over a passenger car tire?

I wouldn't think so. The Blizzack DM-V1 is called the SUVtire but it is not a LT tire it is P metric. In a GLK I would try to get something with a little more performance. I wouldn't think you would want Q rated marshmellow sidewalls in that.

That is what I am running on the LR3. Good dry handling and quiet/smooth.  Good winter performance.

I am also going to have Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow (235/60/17) installed next week (though dealer).  The other option was 19" Dunlop 3D or Pirelli Sotto Zero 270 which were way more expensive (including the rims).  Not sure why the stock tires (Dunlop) are snowflake rated since they definitely do not look like winter tires that I have had on my previous vehicles.

Is the stock Dunlop an all terrain tire?

It seems to me that there are a number of snowflake-labelled all terrain tires including BFG All Terrain T/A KO. The BFG AT's are okay in snow, but lousy on ice.....tried this for two winters (got stuck 10 times one winter), before I switched a set of studded winter tires.

Not sure how they (various all terrain tires) managed to get the snowflake on their sidewalls? The rubber is similar to all/three season tires...not soft like winter tires. Plus, they don't have sipes like true winter tires. Or is the mountain snowflake standard that easy to pass?

The bar was simply set too low. To get the symbol, a tire only has to be 10% better than their reference all season tire.

Yes, I read that too.  Seems like they're testing the tires at least and against a reference tire.  Unlike what was done with "all season" tires where it was simply a ratio of total void space to tread area.

According to the article, some modern winter tires are now at 130 or 140% of the reference. So 110%+ still isn't atrociously bad or anything.

Probably no worse than say crash safety on a 2011 car vs a 2001 car. Worse? Yes. But its not like the world was ending in 2001.

I suppose, but I doubt many people buy a mountain-&-snowflake tire expecting that it's only 10% better than an all-season.

And that's not 10% better than the best all-season, just 10% better than an average all-season, circa 1999.

Is there a site that shows the tires that are at 140% for ice, loose snow, packed snow, and slush?

Here are the tire reviews conducted by the APA (one of the organizations referenced in the article): http://apa.ca/tire_wintertireratings.asp

While the results aren't explicitly stated as a percentage of the reference, you can assume that the top-rated tires are the ones they say scored in that 140% range.

And yet a top tier tire today is only 40% better than an average all season from 1999.

I just don't think the spread is that wide.

That said, we're comparing some random index statistic without any idea what goes into it...so lets agree to disagree (sort of?) ??? :)
