Nokian WR G2 kilometers expected
« on: September 17, 2011, 02:53:02 pm »
I'm thinking about buying 4 of the Nokian WR G2. They would be used all year on my 2005 Camry SE V6, here in Calgary. I would like to hear from someone, who has  used up a set of these, as to how many kms they lasted when driving on them all year. Also, were you pleased with the tires?
Thanks

I had the WR (not G2) on a Volvo XC90. Really liked them great traction summer and winter. My lease ended before the tires were done. I estimate I would have got around 50-60K out of them.

I agree with the estimate. I drove my WR for 4 winters and 4 summers or about 60K. I. Could get another 10K. Perhaps but not winter hence I'm replacing them this winter.
With the G2 on the SUV it seems like 3 winters safe driving but will see.

Thanks again for the informative replys.

My OEM tires (Bridgestone EL400) are down to 4/32" after 56,000 kms. I don't trust them anymore for winter operation.

I only drive about 8,000 kms per year. If I can get 6 years from the Nokian WR G2, then that would be great. I was quoted $1080 (total out the door price) for the Nokian WR G2, so that would only be $180 per year, which seems reasonable.

Shop harder, $1,080 is outrageous!!!!!

My son put a set of Nokian WRG2 tires on his Chrysler minivan last year for $774 complete including HST and the sneaky McGuinty tire tax.

Well, here in Calgary, the only source I have found is Kal Tire, for the Nokian WR G2. They don't have any competition that I can see. Perhaps in Ontario you have more choices to buy from.

If anyone knows of  a cheaper price for 215/55/R17 in Calgary area, I'm all ears (actually all eyes on these forums) ;D.

Try the online tire stores. 1010Tires carries Nokian. Your 215/55/R17 size is not coming up on the website. Telephone them for a price. They have a free shipping promo on currently.

There are lots more U.S. and Canadian online stores. Any local independent repair shop can install and balance them, usual cost is around $90. You should still be quite a few bucks ahead.

If you can't get Nokians for a reasonable price, Goodyear, Hankook, Vredestein and Yokohama are all rushing similar tires to market. Read the independent reviews. Nokians are the All Weather tire gold standard. Don't know how good the others are.

We don't know OP tire size. You may be comparing apples and oranges here. If OP has 18"+ wheels then those priices are not out of line.

Well, I've purchased the Nokian WR G2's, and they appear to drive much the same as my former all-season tires. I can hear a little more noise from the tires, but that is expected due to the more aggressive tread pattern.

The next day I checked the cold tire pressure and found them all at 37 psig, even though the Toyota sticker on my door jam clearly says 31 psig. I lowered them all to 31. Why the "skilled technians" at Kal Tire would use 37 rather than 31 is anyones guess :o

Has anyone else found new tires at the wrong pressure??

Most of the time, tire installers, even dealers will overinflate tires. The only one I know that put the correct pressure in new tires is my local Costco warehouse.

X2. costco put the ridgeline at 32 psi.

A few years ago a local Michelin dealer put my 265/70-16 Michelin LTX M/S at near 40 psi. Right on the tire sidewall it read 35 psi max. ::)

Yeah. I'm in the habit of checking the air pressure after tire work after a few cases of over/under inflation. The worst was almost 60lbs in the rear tire of my FZ6! It was supposed to be 36lbs max.

i purposely put few extra lbs in tires when i do them.
marginal increase in fuel economy, and also a bit of wiggle room in case of minor tire puncture, or slow leak.

(and i kinda like the idea of having bit extra air, for some reason...  probably from my Fit ownership..  OE dunlops always "looked" low on air when i had them exactly on factory pressure.. i had to inflate them more.)

I am also interested a set of WRG2's (for a Honda CRV) and a number of threads on this particular tire suggest that 38 psi is the best pressure to run these tires at regardless of the car manufacturer's tag.  FYI.

Adhere to the automaker's recommended pressure, usually found on a doorjamb sticker and typically 30- 35 psi. Never exceed the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. Set to the “cold” pressure after the vehicle has been parked at least three hours or driven less than 1˝ kilometers.

Check tire pressure monthly. A $10, 5- 99 pounds per square inch (psi) mechanical gauge is adequate. Tires lose 1-psi for every 5°C drop in outside temperature. They also lose pressure over time, as much as 1˝-psi per month.

Canadian Tire has a very nice Michelin Digital Tire Gauge on sale this week @ $10.49. See attachment.

Hey that gauge is nice. Willcheck it out although I waas eyeing a quality dial one. Anyhow to the OP. in the fall I would never set exactly to the manufacturers rec. pressure. I always set a couple psi high in the fall as the falling temps will bring these in line in the next month or so. Watch for over inflation in the spring.

Do you guys only check/adjust tire pressue once a month or longer? I do it every week or two weeks at the most.

Depends. If the tire in the past doesn't seem to change then yeah about once a month or before a long highway run. If the tire is a leaker or seems to lose pressure then I am a little more vigilant. Right now both my main vehicles have TPMS as the complete lazy man backup.
