I was at PFAFF here in Oakville yesterday  browsing for my 2012 summer car. I 'm thinking a 2005-06 911 Carrera S or 4S. Any issues?

Intermediate Shaft failures and the Rear Main Seals leak prematurely.  Estimates are that 10% of engines suffer catastrophic failures by 90K miles.  98 and 99 - pure junk.  Porsche came in with failed "fix" for 2000-2005. 2006 Porche installed heavier bearings, but problems are still showing up and the new IMS bearings require complete tear down of motor.  So a 2005 with the IMS replaced would be less risky than a 2006.

Consequently, you would need to find a unit that had IMS replaced which would mean that it had a new clutch and other associated parts.

Clutch will cost you about 8K tax in.  AC failures common.

Next summer you can pull a 2006/45k miles out of the States all day long for 40K.  Just expect to spend 10 -15K the first 2 years if you're going retail on the repairs.

Thanks for the info.  Do you own a 911??

Older = Better.  A 993 is priced as high as a later car for good reason.  They're 100x better.  A 1997 911 is the best 911, ever.
No place I'd rather be...

After two Porsches, eight Mercedes and two BMWs, I finally decided to stop punishing myself.  Not saying there weren't some awesome cars in there, but overall, as time went by, I just got tired of the abuse.

That said, a 1997 C4S would be, uh, allowed to inhabit a portion of my garage...   ;D

Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

You can enlighten me on shopping in the US at the Brit Car Show tomorrow. I am keen on saving $10k if I can  :)

Knowing what I know, I would have a hard time buying (investing...) in a 911 I didn't know.  PCA members sell cars to each other on a regular basis as you know the car and the owner.  When I sold my cars, there was never a moment's thought about advertising the car of it ending up a dealer.  I had a list of enthusiasts ready to go.

So, I'm suspicious of used 911's on lots.  Why are they there?

Of course, in the US, the market is different.  Much higher volume (lower prices by a mile on the new ones) and a smaller percentage owned by enthusiasts, so I bet good cars can be found on lots.

Easy. Trading a car in is still easier than selling it, even with a list of potential buyers.

I would certainly checkout the dealers and the Upper Canada chapter of PCA and ask at the local Porsche Indy place.
