Stinky Diesel
« on: September 13, 2011, 08:23:59 pm »
No,I'm not talking about my ML. Actually it's smoke and odour free. What annoys me is the dirty, oily pump handles and controls on the diesel pumps at area service stations. Would it kill them to replace or clean the plastic handles on the filler nozzles once and awhile?  Maybe even a box of disposable gloves at the pumps ?

If you're going to go diesel you will need a dedicated glove and a zip lock bag.

I was actually thinking about throwing an old pair of work gloves in the back but then I realized they'd only start to stink up the car. I have started to carry a box of wet naps in the glove compartment

Although the days of smelly diesel exhaust are pretty much over, the smelly diesel fuel lives on. I've yet to see a diesel pump that wasn't disgusting. And once that stuff gets on your skin it does not come off easily. Fill up with diesel in the morning and your hands will stink all day. I realize that diesel cars are the holy grail for many here, but until the refueling can be as clean as with gasoline I would never own one.

My step dad keeps a set of leather work gloves in a Zip Lock bag in his diesel pick up.

Buy a NEW set of gloves, and the quality Zip Lock bags and you'll be all set.  I've never smelled diesel in his truck despite being inches from where the gloves sit in the truck.

Give this a try and let us know how it works for you.  Alternatively, you could buy a box of the clear, latex medical gloves and keep those in the truck and toss after each use.

I think a few latex gloves are a requirement for any well equipped glovebox.  I especially like the blue nitrile ones.  Never know when you need them, especially in medical emergencies.

Yea..the ones I use aren't actually latex...but you get the idea.  Not a bad idea either way to have a set of gloves in the car.

A box of 100 disposible latex gloves isn't that expensive.   You probably just need to use one to hold the nozzle.  Toss if fuel gets on it.

Don't they have any full service stations where you live?

Full service is very rare. I haven't seen any in my area for years.

When I've filled up my dad's 2006 Jetta TDI I wore work gloves and put them in a Ziploc bag and tossed it in the trunk. Good luck getting the stench of diesel off of your hands.

this is pure hearsay.  I believe New Jersey only has full service stations... they don't allow self serve.

There was a full service station in Guelph until last year... I drove in once and started filling my car and was told it was full service.

Why hand sanitizers?  People seem to be so scared of bacteria these days.  If it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger.
