Race #3 for me -- video inside.
« on: September 09, 2011, 12:39:02 pm »
So this was the last race of the season for us.  For this race we ran 50min straight instead of our 30 min race.  I was worried about fuel and tires during the race so I had to conserve, although it turned out fuel wasn't a concern, I had plenty left, tires were!

I qualified 1st and ran a 1:18.1, 3 seconds faster than my previous best and 1.5 seconds faster than 2nd place, the remainder of the field qualified between 1:21's and 1:23s...

I figured it would be boring to run at the front of the pack so I volunteered to start mid-pack, so I started 10th overall.

During the race I was concerned about overheating my outside front left tire so I ran conservatively, in fact I ran 1:21's the entire race when I could have run much faster.   It took me about 35 mins to catch up to the front of the pack and take 1st place.  Of course I didn't know at the time, because I didn't know who was first!  So I pushed hard for a bit and then was pretty sure I was in first so I slowed down when I started to catch some slower lap traffic again.

It was extremely fun!  Turns out it was good I conserved the tires as I ended up cording one with 3 laps left!

Well if this writing thing doesn't work out, maybe you could become a pro driver.

That's consistent with what you hear pro drivers say it's harder to go slow than fast all the time.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

Great job, Winger!  For me, it wasn't that I might be bored at the front of the pack, it's that I had a much tougher time concentrating and staying sharp when racing by myself.  Did you find that at all when you were ahead for some time?
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

I did make a few mistakes up in the lead but I'm pretty good at being consistent on my own.  From behind I was really racing my tires and keeping myself consistent to not go too hard or to slow.  It was an interesting mind game to do consistent laps at a a certain pace and not go too slow or too fast.  I always wondered how the f1 drivers do it, now I understand it was cool to run 3 sec a lap slower than I was capable but to do it lap after lap for 50 min

I'm not the fastest guy out there I know that but what I am is consistent!

Nice work!

With all the different cars out there, how can you judge whether it is the car or the driver that is making the difference?  What are the restrictions to level the field?

Also, does it not concern you that yours or someone else's tires could have shredded?  I mean someone could have taken you out and written off your car.  What checks are there in place to make sure all the cars competing can actually finish the race safely?

There is a average time restriction, the short track we are using has enough corners to even out the cars.  On the longer track higher horsepower has a huge advantage but not so on this track, so everyone is typically within a second.

Stuff can happen, cars can crash, knock on wood nothing has happened yet!  You are responsible for the mechanical safety of your car, it's pretty obvious when your tires are done, my buddy had a tire start to go on him and he got off the track, you feel it and go check it out. Chances of a tire exploding or something are pretty slim.

I can get a wider angle but then all you see is my rearview mirror due to the mount point unfortunately.  This camera is much better than a go pro, sound as well, go pro sound sucks.  What I need is a better mounting point.

I just uploaded a 100meg file it was 10gigs off the camera.  Go-pro is good but I'm using a real video camera, it's big but offers great video, it is faster to upload low quality is all.
