What engine would you choose?
« on: September 09, 2011, 12:11:48 pm »
Forget whether it's FWD or AWD, you want the engine in it of your choosing. We already know that you can't get AWD if you choose the four banger, so let's concentrate on what makes you happy.

My choice would be the Ecoboost 3-5 V-6. After all the very positive revues, including the one from our resident owner/expert out in Manitoba who abused the engine all the way to BC and back and still enjoyed it.

I think Ford is missing a potential market here, even if there is some demand for the smaller engines. Maybe down the road they will offer it, in the meantime only the F-150 people get to have fun.

My first thought is that I'd want an Ecoboost 4-cyl in a vehicle like that.

The 3.5 Ecoboost 6 strikes me as being a case of more power than the chassis could handle. Maybe if Ford made an SVT version or something. But, seriously, an SVT Explorer?

Of course, I haven't driven either, so maybe the Flex and Explorer aren't as mediocre as I'm thinking they are.

The obvious choice was omitted from the list - the 5.0 V8 all the way.

FTW!!

If not the 5.0, then the 4 just because it's a little different.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

The boosted V6 all the way.  I wouldn't want the ecoboost 4 cyl in a vehicle like the Edge.  If you find yourself in a postion where it's off boost, that thing wouldn't be able to get out of it's own way.  I had an '09 Edge as a rental once.  The n/a 3.5L v6 is just fine as well.

I'm cheap and keep my vehicles forever, so I'd say the 4 because it offers simplicity, reliability (hopefully) and economy all in a package that has decent power. If I was towing I'd have to say the EcoBoost 6 for sure.

The standard 3.5 would likely be the best choice for longevity as the others are turbocharged.

in the 1,000,000 chance that I'd buy an Edge ( or a Flex...more likely) then the turbo V6 would probably be my choice as I'd only buy a vehicle that big if I were going to be towing.  Keh-vin is convincing that the ecoboost V6 is a fine engine if you have deep pockets for gas.

And I like turbocharged engines.    if they offered a diesel now...I'd take that in a big thing like an Edge or Flex.  I like diesels as well.

Yep. 2L+ I4 turbodiesel would sell a lot more Fords of this class than a boosted V6, in the real market conditions. How about another poll option?  ;)

Inline 3.0 straight 6.  Or 6L V12 please.

Some Flex people and Taurus people get to enjoy the 3.5 Ecoboost too. :)

I can't see too much demand for the FWD Ecoboost 4cyl in the Edge nor Explorer, at least not in Canada. The na 3.5 in the AWD Explorer is the minimum power for that vehicle.

This is the one, and it's standard in the Edge Sport. Fuel economy matches the 3.5, and in the real world will likely match the 2.0 EB.

Engine type    3.7L Twin independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) V6 Engine
Transmission    6-speed SelectShift™ Automatic™ with paddle activation
Final drive ratio    3.16 (FWD) / 3.39 (AWD)
Fuel economy (EPA-estimated)    FWD: 19 city / 26 hwy / 22 combined  AWD: 17 city / 25 hwy / 21 combined
Horsepower (SAE net @ rpm)    305 @ 6,500
Torque (lb.-ft. @ rpm)    280 @ 4,000

I knew the Taurus had the Turbo option, but admit I forgot about the Flex. But if it can get it, why not the Edge and Explorer then. To me it's an option that people might want to choose. Not saying it's for everyone, but if you like spirited driving and have a hankering for good old fun , as in go faster, the Ecoboost 6 would help wean those away from the V8 mindest.
