We are looking for a good car that will be able to stand strong winters, but we want something that do not uses too much gaz. We also are going to buy used and we have a budget from 5000$ to 10 000$

I'd get something AWD... I'd start by looking at the Impreza, Forester, CR-V and RAV4.

Something to consider is what dealers are up there for you. In case you need service or parts you do not want to buy a car with no dealer in town. A Fiat might be a good example.

So check out what dealers are there and look for those brands. It will make your life easier knowing you can get service. And winter is cold so you want to make sure when you have a problem that you can go and get it fixed.

Haha, I actually LOL'd.

Inco made a great point about seeing what dealerships are available where you live.  A used Subie keeps sticking out as a good choice to me though.

I left Whitehorse in 1983, and back then it had a well developed dealer infrastructure that meant you could own pretty much any mass-market brand and have it serviced easily.  Whitehorse is pretty civilized, and even 30 years ago, a FWD car on snow tires easily handled city-based winter driving.  It's cold there, but snowfall is less than in many parts of the interior of BC.  Where you really want AWD is if you plan on spending time out of town.

My Honda Civic easily got me around town.  Lots of people had high-clearance 4X4's but they were mostly for hunting and traveling off highway.

A Subaru would be a pretty awesome compromise, and there is a dealer there.  Gasoline used to be heinously expensive compared to down south, but now is comparable to BC prices.  $1.30L in Whitehorse now, not much more than many places in Canada, probably less than some, in fact.

It's a great place, btw.  Loved living there.
No place I'd rather be...

Only 1.30/L? Thats the price at the Shell next to my house.

RAV4. CRV. Forester. Maybe a Tacoma Crew Cab.

Forester is a slightly more risky bet given its probably harder to find a solid Indie for a Scoob. Toyota, Honda, and the Domestics I'd imagine are no trouble at all.

Fly to Vancouver and pick up something nice and rust-free; then commence your trip north. I would lean towards a nice RAV4 and put Nokian winter tires on it.

Whitehorse has a good selection of brand dealers and indie mechanics.  Any Subaru is relatively simple (even newer ones) and non-Subaru techs can handle most service and repairs.

I don't think you can get the newest Gen Outback for $10k or less, but a 2003-05 is probably within range.
