May be shopping again sooner than expected
« on: September 01, 2011, 05:14:59 am »
The poor little Mini got it's face punched in by a Dodge Dakota yesterday. Nobody hurt but airbag went off and the front end is pretty well gone with the engine rolled off it's mounts. It will take a day or two but I have to think it's a write off. I have to say I was very impressed at the way the Mini performed in this "real life" crash test. I'm not sure another subcompact would have faired as well.

Not a great time for us to have to buy a new car as we have our youngest starting university next week, I just bought the ML, and we did some major home repairs this summer. It never rains but it pours!  :(  Anyway, we'll have to wait for the insurance to decide and then go from there.
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

Bummer indeed.  Glad everyone fared ok.

Will you go with another Mini?

Quite probably not. My wife really liked the car but our roads are so badly broken up and patched here in Saint John that the ride with the sports suspension and low profile, runflat tires was getting a little hard to take on a daily basis.

Oh wow, really sorry to hear about your Mini!  Of course though, glad everyone is fine and there were no injuries!!  That's obviously most important.

Does your wife like the Fiat 500s?  They come in a cabrio, don't they?  I assume you would want another convertible eh?

Good to hear that you are ok, sad to hear about the loss of the Mini though. Good news is that it did it's job and protected you. Now let's hope those Gods of Insurance smile favourably too. ;)

If its a 2009 (2 years old) and you had depreciation protection/replacement value rider things hsould work out.

Glad everyone is OK. I see wrecked cars every single day and its all the worse when its someone I know.

Funny when you mentioned the Saint John roads first thing that came to mind was that a Juke might have enough ground clearance suspension to handel those big potholes while still be fun.

What do you mean?  Saint John doesn't have any potholes!   ;D ;D

No question the roads here are quite pathetic!  From what I understand, Irving's poor asphalt quality is the culprit.

Yeah, we have a 30 month depreciation waiver so that's the good news if it's a write off. I actually hope it is as I think the crash was hard enough to qualify as pretty major and I'm not sure I'd want it "fixed"

 :D

Seriously though, several people have told me that when the bags have fired it's usually a write off.....any truth to that? Someone else said it usually took damage worth 60-70% of the value to write a car off. Anyone know how it works?

Idem to what Inco said.

I think the Fiat is cute and all, but doesn't it drive poorly?

Its right on both accounts.  Since it can costs anywhere from $2-$4K to replace an airbag, that adds 4-8K to the damage cost for the front airbags.  So If your front end is like 10K in damage and the 2009 is only worth 22K on the market... (All numbers made up, but you get the idea)
