Jaeger, one more bit of convincing - get him to put premium fuel in it.
While Hyundai says regular is fine (and it is), there's a night and day difference running the good stuff. Throttle response improves immensely, it feels ever-so-slightly faster, and the fuel economy even improves by anywhere from 1-2 L/100 km - enough to offset the extra cost! Just because an engine is "ok" to run on 87 doesn't mean it should be. Trust me, it's worth it.
Re: the notchy 1-2 shift, that will improve with time. By about 6,000 km the gearbox will be worked in and operate much more smoothly.
