Oops, I did it again... ;-)
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:14:03 pm »
Well, not me, exactly.  And the "it"?  Well, take a guess.  :)

Okay, so this buddy of mine from the office decided back in the spring he was going to finally replace his ancient 10 year old Accord with something completely different.

The requirements were: rear wheel drive, good power, good handling, manual transmission.

His preferences among the cars he drove shook out this way:

V8 Mustang > V6 Genesis Coupe > V6 Mustang > any Camaro.

But he'd gone back and forth so many times between Mustang and Genesis that I kind of thought this purchase might not happen until next spring.

Then last week we're having a coffee on a Bay St. patio and an extremely freakin' yellow Genesis Coupe rolls by.  He says he really needs to take a look at that car again because it had been a while.  I say hey - let me check with my dealer if there are any special incentives.  What followed wasa tale of good news and bad news.

The good: there was a $4k or 0% option on remaining 2011s.

The bad: they only had two left, one was an auto 2.0T.

The good: the other was a V6 manual.

The bad: extremely freakin' yellow wasn't gonna happen.  Get silver or get a 2012 or get a V8 Mustang.

The good: he was fine with silver.

The good: The car, picked up just today.  With factory cash and dealer dicount, he drove off in a 306hp RWD sports coupe for pocket change more than a Civic SI would run.

The good: with two recent back-to-back referrals, I now have unlimited joyriding priveleges at the dealership.  So I'll let you all know what I think of the Veloster and Genesis 5.0 R-spec some time down the road.  :rofl2:

The Bad: It's a Hyundai.

Relax now...just a light hearted joke.

Not sure i'd label not getting a V8 Mustang as good ...however ... I can see the rationale of that over a Civic.

Makes up for me convincing people not to get Hyundais. ;)

Good for him - his $$, his preferences, his choice.  Not good for someone with different preferences.  I might have preferred a V8 Mustang as well - though I haven't driven one.  I think it is the high-performance bargain to beat right now.  I have driven his car, however, and it is a very nice ride.  More than enough power to have fun, but not so much that you'll never enjoy the bulk of it off-track.  Which is precisely the reasoning that got him back to the Genesis.  A buddy of his just bought a Z06 - and loves it to death - but commented that if he didn't take it to the track, there wouldn't be much point in owning it.  The limits and capabilities are so high that getting anywhere above 50% off-track gets your car confiscated.

Again, that wouldn't necessarily hold me back from a 412hp Mustang, but I do get where he / they are coming from.

...

Exactly. If you want low capabilities, you should have taken to the Mazda dealer where he could have got at least $8,000 off an RX8. ;)

Then you could have had joy ride abilities in Mazda's new fun stuff like...umm...a Miata and...umm...well...a Miata.

One of his requirements was "good power", so that sorta rules out the torqueless RX-8.   ;D

I hadn't read (or thought from my drives) that the Genesis was a poor handler...

Me neither.  Sure didn't notice such when I drove it, either.

The Coupe is an awesome ride, but let us know how he likes the manual in it? On my test drive, I found the clutch engagement a bit too abrupt and with aggressive throttle tip-in I stalled it twice. It was the only manual that I stalled repeatedly in 20 years of driving. The dealer confirmed it was a common complaint from customers and I wonder if Hyundai has addressed it fpr 2011/12.
Other than that, gorgeous looking car inside and out.

Sure - will do.  I can't say that I had any difficulty driving it fairly smoothly, and I'm a bit rusty with a stick since buying an auto back in the Spring.  The shifter was a touch on the notchy side, but much better than the one in my departed Altima.  Didn't notice any abrubt take-up with the clutch, but it did have fairly short travel.

It's relative I suppose.  Drive a Genesis and an RX-8 back to back...they just aren't there yet when it comes to suspension development, and that is commonly stated in reviews.  That's not a terrible thing, they've not had much practice at it, and by the accounts I've read, their domestic market preferences don't require much tuning to achieve.

Yes but compared to an RX-8 lots of cars are poor handlers, the RX-8 is very good indeed.  Whereas the GC is just good.

That was my only "car-based" hesitation in buying one. A friend also didn't like it and opted for the automatic V6. For me, the other reasons were, no factory cash when I bought and the dealer gave a lousy trade-in value. Otherwise I would likely be driving that exact car now. However, delighted with my GT.

Indeed.  The RX-8 is a fantastic handler.
