Senna, Documentary
« on: August 29, 2011, 02:56:10 am »
Hi All,

this is my short and sweet movie review.  haven't done it in a while, so here you go.
About :
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424432/

Trailer :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrbJPsPtTyU

So this Documentary is about arguably one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, Ayrton Senna's F1 careers and his untimely demise.

i'm going to come flat out and say it....   i enjoyed it, but *I* don't think it's up to the hype.
the film is amazingly focused on his fairly short F1 career.  there's bits about his charity in brazil, his national pride, but mostly about his competitiveness in F1 and his uncompromising "WINNING-ness"(my word,  ;D)

as an ex-honda fan, i wanted to see bits about his involvement in NSX development or his insights/opinions on his honda powered mclaren F1 cars, but there was nothing about cars.  and not that much about his apparently genius prowess in rain either..

at nearly the end, the film talks about how Williams Renault F1 beat him..  with that other famous and legendary racer at the helm.   the ending was ...., to me(sad, and touching, but not as powerful as i expected.)

Maybe my expectation was un-reasonable.
I expected greatness from Senna, the man and the film.  perhaps the man was, as with all champions, but the film didn't convey it to me.

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

I was barely able to continue watching F1 after Gilles died, and Ayrton sealed it for me.
No place I'd rather be...

Watched it on Apple TV a week ago and liked it. Nice to see F1 politics have not changed much  ::) Did not like the fact that he moved to Williams and not give Dennis a chance to catch up technology wise. In the end the rules change wiped out the advantage and the Williams cars were crap without the ecu's.

It is only on the US Netflix, Canada doesn't have it yet.

I also watched it on the US Netflix and thought it was a great film. Definitively worth a watch.

Off topic, but my favourite clip of Gilles racing - at Dijon in 1979 against Rene Arnoux:

I use unblock-us.com - I pay $5 per month and I set my internet connection to use their DNS servers.

When I connect to Netflix, the unblock-us DNS servers route me through one of their proxy servers in the US.  This makes it appear as if I'm in the US.  Once I start a movie, my browser (or whatever device I'm using, Apple TV2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, ...) establishes direct RTP streams to Netflix.

You can set your DNS servers at your router (so all IP address lookups are performed through unblock-us), or only on the devices you want to watch US content.

It's great for watching all kinds on US-only content, like Hulu, Vudu, Pandora, CBS ..., and for NHL Center Ice (where if you appear to be in the US, you get access to local games, which would normally be blacked out).

Others might use a service which provides a VPN connection to a server in the US (i.e., http://www.witopia.net), but this forces all of your internet traffic through the VPN connection, which can lead to reduced bandwidth.

They have a free 1 week trial and they have good instructions on how to pay for these US-only services (i.e., where you can't use a Canadian credit card).

I'm also using the same service (Unblockus) and to date, its been flawless. I used Paypal to pay for mine and it worked perfectly. I also have to use Paypal for another US online store as they don't take foreign credit cards. Seems to be an easy way around things.
