RRocket's Classic 1990 Lexus LS400
« on: August 28, 2011, 05:42:22 pm »
I didn't want to buy another car.  Really.  But after seeing the condition and the price I was offered to buy it, I would have been a fool not to.  And what's more, this is THE Lexus that started it all for Lexus.  Also, the 1990 was not offered for sale in Canada..we didn't get it until 1991.

This vehicle was a one owner car.  Purchased new by a Dr. and lovingly maintained by he and his wife until a recent stroke prevented him from driving it further.  The wife did NOT want to sell it, but they only needed one car now.  They taught their kids how to drive in it and they had so many fond memories of the car.  It was almost part of the family she said and had been a fixture in their lives for the last 20 years.  She had tears in her eyes as she signed the ownership over.  I asked her to keep it and NOT sell it to me.  I even offered to keep the car maintained for her if she wanted to keep it.  But she declined saying that it was time to move on.  I assured her it would be going to a great home and we'd be the caretakers of this fine car.

She had offered it initially for sale for $5,000.  Although the mileage is high at 325,000kms, it's not high for this particular model of car.  They easily go well beyond 500,000kms worry free.  The condition of the car was fantastic and it drove with nary a squeak or rattle.  Very, very impressive.  No rust anywhere and only a couple of door dings that will come out easily and 3 speakers that need replacing along with the power antenna.  That's all that was wrong with it.  Since this is Windsor and Land of The Domestics, apart from us, nobody even looked at the car the whole time it was for sale.  I had kept on eye on the ad, and the price kept going down and down.  She had my e-mail, and finally offered the car to me for $1500.  Yes...$1500.  I sorta felt guilty buying the car for so little knowing how much it meant to her.  Anyways..here are some pics.  This is even before I detailed the car.  This is how I took delivery of it.

Yea..I'll use it to DD some.  This and the TT are my DD.  Will be excellent for the many road trips we take and our golf outings, dinner with friends, etc.  It's just a really, really nice car and I'm proud to have it in the driveway.

Great looking piece, and we've discussed how cool of an engineered car this is.

For $1,500, it looks great.  For $5,000, I can also see why there would be some hesitation given the mileage.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

That is A LOT of car for $1500. A true modern day classic. Is the current generation Accord/Sonata the size of this "Large" luxury sedan?

A great car and a steal at this price. I have considered a used LS400 many times but the V-8's fuel habit has scared me away, perhaps irrationally. However, at that price, it doesn't much matter how much fuel it uses.

Also correct is the mileage on the car;low for a Japanese luxury car. When I sold my 2000 TL, the odo showed 320,000 km and the car drove like new with only very minor maintenance. Even got a good dollar for it when I sold it.

Congratulations!

It's one of those offers that are impossible to pass. Even the driver's seat leather is not cracked.
Congrats!

Nice find! Always admire the old Lexus models. They age well both mechanically and from a styling standpoint... yeah they are a bit old fashioned in looks now but it has a classic appeal that is sometimes hard to find. Really nice car! Do enjoy!

BTW: I didn't know you had a TT? When did that happen and where are the pictures? :)

Yea, Lexus was the last car manufacturer to offer one.  The 2010 SC430 was the last car to come with a cassette deck.

Yea.  I can see them from my driveway.  Roughly 2 km away I would guess.  Quite close. I don't mind them at all.  Only on the windiest of days and everything atmospherically perfect can I hear them.  I think I've hear the "whoosh-whoosh-whoosh" twice or so since they've been in.  That's it.  A nice side bonus was our power was kind-of iffy and would often flicker and during storms power would almost always go out.  The power dimmed and flickered often enough that I didn't use compact fluorescent lighting because the constant dimming/surges used to wear them out too fast.  They must have upgraded the local grid here or something because this problem has been gone since the turbines arrived.
