Saf's Ford Ranger is HARD SHIFTING
« on: August 23, 2011, 03:24:02 pm »
...."some say it's his fault and that he has 4 testicles.. and a HUGE ego.I say that's a load of bollocks"............

"Others say he threw his granny off a double decker bus....for ringing the conductors BELL.................with a Ball Peen Hammer"....

well here's the Problemo............My "pristine "FRAUD RANGER 1997 3 Litre V6 of 260,000 plus clicks has taken to Hard/delayed  shifting............I read another missive on here and tried the GUNK TRANSMEDIC SPA CURE......worked for a fortnight or so.......but (Particularly in the morning when tranny is cold)..it will slow shift..i.e just idle away for 4 to 5 seconds or so then  engage the transmission...sometimes smoothly other times with a hard shift immediate engagement and a chirp of the tyres......

Question wot Gives ???? I'm copasetic with cogs & clutches but Autos de fe leave me scratching my torque casing........
will a few $100's spent on a tranny "servicing"...drop the pan...tighten the "bands"...(still an option on a 97 transmission?) and replace half the fluid with new ...be worth IT.......????

There is a BOX of TIM_BITS    of transmission gunk...for the BEST ANSWER.... :'( :light: :shuffle:

I have no answers for you, just bad news as well.  GF's old Taurus with the 3.0L V6 and auto (albeit FWD) did the same thing late in its life.  Tranny flush did nothing to cure the issue.

Methinks the old Tranny is in her death throes. Time to look for a younger and much more responsive replacement. ;)

It certainly wouldn't hurt to drain/fllush the tranny fluid and replace it with some new stuff.  Maybe add a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix.  It's worth a try before spending $$ on a rebuilt tranny.

Add another can of Transmedic, then add another.  :)

Sounds like you have a 4R44E transmission. This might help:

(Mid way down the page)

Might be the separator plate issue.

Good luck.

For 1995, the 4R44E (4 cylinder - light-duty) and 4R55E (6 cylinder - heavy-duty; IE: Explorer) electronically controlled transmission replaced the A4LD. It is mechanically identical to the A4LD.

One of the best things you can do for your auto transmission is get the largest, aftermarket, stacked plate cooler you can fit behind your grille. The factory cooler is marginal at best, due to its being tied in with your radiator. Remember, with that set-up, if you overheat your engine, you will overheat your transmission. Heat is the biggest enemy of the automatic transmission. Change your fluid and filter every year, or every 12-15,000 miles if used hard. Use ONLY the fluid recommended by Ford. Only use synthetic fluid if it is required by Ford. With proper maintenance, these transmissions should last well over 100,000 miles.       :o      - Gloria Roozen

Ta for the varied suggestions....................I'd like to get another winter out of it...so I think i'll take the middle road....spend a few bucks on a Trans flush and band adjustment (whatever that is ) with a Lucas or TransMedic additive and Pray.............

Sir O..that possible fix you pointed out sounds complex& expensive at a dealership...half way to a reconditioned Tranny...but appreciate the link.

People must be using tranny's out of Rangers for doorstops. Checked out the graveyard yet? Time to get your hands dirty and the gleam off the wrenches? ;)
