At noon today, my wife dropped off the van and they told her there would be a charge of $250+HST for the service.

The van is 4.5 years old with ~85,000km so still under bumper-to-bumper manufacturer warranty.

Not an 'effing chance and I can't stand it when I hear about dealers still trying to pull this one. The automotive industry has enough trouble with credibility and trustworthiness, dealers like yours need to be put to a firing squad! A Honda dealership tried to pull that one on my wife a few years ago when the SiR threw a code. I was VERY vocal in their showroom on a Saturday morning getting my money back. After the code popped up a couple of more times it turned out to be a pressure sensor in the gas tank. WARRANTY. Shame on them and shame on your dealer for trying this.

f your car is under bumper to bumper warranty there is no way, shape or form that a dealer (especially the original seller and as you say you have done all maintenance with them) should charge for that. If it's found afterwards that it is a non-warrantable issue that is proven conclusively, then of course you should agree to pay all costs.

Even so, $250 to figure out what code has been thrown up is theivery. That's a 30 second job easily done in the drive through reception bay.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.
