Isn't there a law that allows you to return a used car purchase within 30 days and 500km? I thought I read that somewhere...

NO. There is no cooling off period to return vehicle purchases. If a particular dealer offers to do so is one thing. There is no law that says they have to.

The legal claim would not have to necessarily take the form of a cooling off period.  The OP could threaten to sue for a fundamental breach of contract since the vehicle supplied does not conform to the reasonable expectations of the parties (unless this was an "as is" deal).  The threat of legal action is very often enough to get a desired result since preparing a response can easily cost a dealership more than supplying a remedy to the customer.  Depending on your perspective, this is either the benefit or the curse of lawyers.

Of course, that's quite different than an explicit law providing returns within a certain amount of time and mileage which is what I was commenting on.

No Alberta dealer will touch a BC beater with a 10 foot pole. So that leaves private buyers. It sounds like you will basically have to misrepresent the car to sell it to some unfortunate individual.

Jeebus.

So, what needs to happen to a car to make the airbag and ABS lights both go on?  An accident?

No.  Any sensor, module, or failed connection will do it.
