Can`t pass out of province inspection...
« on: August 21, 2011, 11:47:18 pm »
Hi everybody! Hope somebody can help me.. I bought a car form dealer in BC  (Pacific auto sport - NEVER buy used car from this dealer ). so  the car was cheap  and i understand that probably will need to fix somethings, but they sad that i  easy will pas inspection.  I am living in AB. I didnt know that they check every small detail in this inspection ind to fix everything and i need to pay  double more that i paid for vehicle to pass it
So i wondering if i still can register this car in BC without any inspections and will they do it if i am permanently living in AB..

may be any ideas what else i can do to register my vehicle without that inspection..

Thank you

Return the car and tell them it won't pass inspection and to do that would mean spending more than the car is worth. It's worth a try, but to be honest I think you are stuck with it. How much time has elapsed since you bought it?

So you bought a car in another province without having your own mechanic inspecting it before paying for it?

I see no reason for the dealer to take the car back and its now your problem.

Isn't there a law that allows you to return a used car purchase within 30 days and 500km? I thought I read that somewhere...

.... i read this last night and was thinking "man the OP is scr3wd"

but anyway.   alberta doesn't even have that stringent out of province inspection, i thought.

now, it would help if you revealed the model and year of the car you've purchased.   (and why it wouldn't pass inspection)

Canadian Tire is one of the recognized out-of-province inspection facility.  (there are others.  just open your local yellow pages)

and just because you have it inspected at one facility does not mean you have to perform repairs at the same place.   shop around.   there may be cheap places.   or talk to your mechanically inclined friends and see if they know any shop that's good and reasonably priced.    Canadian Tire is usually notorious for subpar work at first tier dealership prices.

OR if all this seem daunting to you, you can try and resell the car.  then get one in AB so you wouldn't have this headache.

whatever course you take, good luck, and welcome to the board.  hope you learn more things about cars!

NO. There is no cooling off period to return vehicle purchases. If a particular dealer offers to do so is one thing. There is no law that says they have to.

And there's nothing to protect consumers against used car dealers that will do anything to sell their cars full of problems to ignorant consumers? Then again, the very first thing I'd do is get an inspection and would never rely on the salesman's word that "it will pass an inspection easily"...

Buying beaters out of province is a very bad idea. We are often presented old/cheap/beater trades that are registered in another province. These vehicles are virtually worthless because, as the OP discovered, they must be repaired to pass an Out of Province Inspection. The cost of these repairs usually makes these cars unsellable. Doing a wheel alignment is part of the inspection process and it can't be done because of suspension problems, worn ball joints, etc. These repairs commonly are quite expensive relative to the car's value. These are the the cars that wholesalers buy from us for $100 or less.

Now, I recommend the OP get a second opinion on the cost required to pass the inspection. The inspecting location could be grossly inflating what is actually required just to pass the inspection.

In Alberta (and I think Ontario and perhaps other provinces) dealers are required to provide an inspection detailing a vehicles deficiencies. I don't think this is law in BC.

It is likely that the OP's car would've passed BC's inspection to register it there. Out of Province inspections are more stringent.

Unless it is a really new car I pretty much view any non-specialty out of province car as a parts car. Your best bet if it is indeed that bad is to see it as is to someone in BC.

Not in Ontario.  No idea AB was so strict.  :o

Only out of province. I remember a long time back BC was dumping all their crap, accident damaged vehicles into Alberta so the out province inspection came into being.

Thanks AS. How are "as is" sales regulated in Ontario? In Alberta, dealers used to be able to just write " sold as is" on the bill of sale and that was it - total Caveat Emptor. Now they are required to inspect the vehicle (not required to fix it) to show the customer what is wrong with it.

On "as is" (zero warranty) and "unsafetied" vehicles the situation is essentially the same in Ontario.  If for some reason a store finds themselves selling an "as is" vehicle to an employee, etc., then an understanding is made with the purchaser and every part of the vehicle is listed as "deficient" sans an inspection.

Sounds like they are lying and/or taking advantage of you.  Since when do cosmetic things need to be replaced to pass a safety inspection??

Your first problem was taking it to a VW dealership.  Big mistake.  Take it to another mechanic, and independent mechanic (who maybe specializes in VW or Euro cars) and get them to do the inspection.  Or is there some rule that say you MUST go to the dealership.  Cord??
