VW UP! probably never to be seen here...sadly
« on: August 21, 2011, 08:18:55 am »
This would be an interesting car in the Aveo size range.   They don't mention the transmission but I'd guess it has a MT and the 7spd DSG available.

From the UK Sunday Times.

Volkswagen is going back to its roots. The car you see here may not look like the original people’s car — the 1938 Beetle — but, according to the company, it is precisely that, for the 21st century. Called the Up!, it is a stylish, super-efficient runaround aimed squarely at city-dwellers. And despite boasting many of the technological features usually found in top-of-the-range luxury cars, it will cost a budget-friendly £8,000 when it goes on sale early next year.

These are the first pictures and details of the car that VW says is the shape of things to come for millions of motorists. Although it looks unassuming, the German company expects it to become as popular as better-known models such as the Golf and Polo within a few years.

It is small — 17in shorter than the Polo and well suited to tight parking spaces. But it is also roomy: the boxy shape allows four adults to ride in comfort. The boot is said to hold 251 litres, only 29 litres less than a Polo’s, and to expand to 951 litres with the rear seats folded.

The cabin is brightened by a colour-coordinated fascia, a trick also used to good effect in the Fiat 500 and Mini. Sprouting from the top of the dashboard is what VW calls a personal infotainment device. In addition to displaying information about the car, it will feature ParkPilot, which helps the driver to park, and apps for navigation, telephone and video player, controlled by touchscreen and voice. The car will also have “city emergency braking”, which uses radar to sense when the Up! is in danger of crashing and applies the brakes.

The Up! won’t be a road rocket — the more powerful three-cylinder petrol engine musters 73bhp and the lower-spec version just 58bhp — but fuel economy of almost 70mpg will be what motorists feeling the pinch will care about. And with CO2 emissions as low as 79g/km on the BlueMotion version, it’s as green as a Nissan Leaf (if you compare the two cars’ well-to-wheels figures). And an electric version of the Up! will go on sale in 2013.

Three trim levels will be offered to British buyers: Take Up! is the entry model, Move Up! the “comfort-oriented” version and High Up! the posh one.
There will be two special editions based on the High Up!, called Up! Black and Up! White. Now, about the name ...

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I wouldn't bet on it not showing up here. It may be small and 'gutless' but with gas prices going where they are and the economy stalling, affordable is the new standard. Let's hope VW will consider NA.

If fuel continues to rise and 500's and Mini's continue to sell well it would make sense for VW to expand by bringing in a model to slot below the Golf. I don't know much about VW's Euro line up but wouldn't that likely be the Polo?

It "ought" to be the Polo but I think that it is maybe too expensive to build and the US factory is going to be full with the Jetta and Passat which are not only cheap but BIG as well.

By the UK price ( which includes 20% tax) the UP! must be cheap to build...I wonder where it is built? Probably somewhere in the cheaper eastern European bits of the EU.

And we don't know how much re-engineering it would need to come here.  Quite likely a different engine that could run on tractor gas.

We will see.

Somewhat lacking in the chic-factor of the Fiat 500, but maybe that's a good thing. Different segment of buyer?

Is it going to feel more like a real car than a Smart?
