Exhaust popping
« on: August 20, 2011, 11:50:03 pm »
Its a moody sucker, that BMW.

On deceleration / upshifts (ie: every time the revs drop), the exhaust makes a popping noise. Fairly subtle. Now I have done some digging on the interwebs and it I have a bunch of posts saying its a lean condition, others saying its a rich condition, and the occasional "hole in exhaust" explanation.

But what is it really? And should I bother with it at all?

Are you referring to scavenging sounds or popping? Scavenging is a kind'a 'buzz' type sound. Popping I think is something else and more to do with unburnt fuel in the exhaust system. Both are harmless but people normally like their cars to pop - sounds like a race car. 8)

PS. BTW, back from watching Totem. Great show.
Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

Popping on drop throttle is unburned fuel making it to the exhaust and igniting.

Is this about what you're hearing?

Nothing that extreme, but yes. A much "bassier" sound though. Guess its not a big deal. :)

You don't want to be behind me when I up-shift under heavy acceleration in my Stage 2 STi  :)
