my compromise is to wear just one headphone - generally trying to leave the ear "facing" traffic free. not the best but it's better than the songs that get stuck in my head while on a long ride  ;D

I entered an MTB race last weekend and missed so much my mp3 player. Was already at the starting line, then I remembered about them, looked in my backpack without success, was too late... Funny thing is they are still missing, ehehehehehe.

Does anyone remember a time before the Sony Walkman when to listen while you ride, you mounted a RadioShack bicycle radio on your handlebar?

I think at low listening levels you would be safe using earbuds. That said, I'm doubting if it's legal to do so.

Have you checked out any of the battery powered bicycle speaker? My company did some work on a wireless speaker a while back with this company Cy-Fi. To be honest I'm not sure if they still exist but it looks like the speaker system is still available.

i only use 1 ear buds when cycling, or use low enuf volume so that i can actually hear traffic and people around me.    (also do the same when i'm running or even walking.)  i never give up my sense of surroundings voluntarily..   must be a habit from my childhood.

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

If we apply the same concept of reducing distractions to cycling that is currently being applied to driving, then the answer is YES.

If all bikes came equipped with mirrors attached to the handlebars and IF all cyclists used them as a matter of course, then maybe, just maybe, one could let it slide.  Based on what I've seen watching fellow cyclists, however, I can't say we as a group are any better than drivers.

Don't even get me started on all those blithely oblivious joggers with ear buds while on the bike path.  ::) >:(
