Stone Chip Repair
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:47:05 pm »
Hi,
I am hoping to get some help to repair the repair that I did...LOL
I have a stone chip and have bought a repair kit...followed the procedure..prime, paint, clear coat, sand, buff with finishing compound.  Unfortunately, the painted area is quite noticeable like there is a little bump although it is kind of smooth when I ran my finger through it...it also looks bigger than the stone chip actually is...I guess I over painted the area (I was using those touch up paint).  May be what make it worst is the fact that I am not able to buff out the haze around the painted area, as a result, the newly painted area is more noticeable...any suggestion??

If I have to re-do it, where do I start??
Your help is greatly appreciated....

Dr. Colour Chip ships to Canada.  I have used their kits.

What make/model/colour is your car, anyways?

I know they do ship to Canada.  And I know I can provide the color code and they can likely match it...
So let say I am going to do that....

How do I correct what I have already done??

Thanks

How big was this chip? It's been a while since I filled paint chips but I remember that paper matches made excellent applicators - the brushes that came with the touch up paint were the worst.

Try sanding it down with ultra fine grit stuff. 2000-3000 grit stuff from an autobody place.  Then buff.  But it also depends what you're using to buff.  Cheap polish by hand?  Good stuff with a machine?  Does the newly painted area look brighter than the older area?  Might just need a REALLY thorough clay bar, polish and wax on the old paint to make it look new again.

And yea...how big was the chip?
