Opinions: 2011 Sonata 2.0T vs 2011 GT-I4 Mazda 6
« on: August 13, 2011, 08:47:40 pm »
These are my choices for a new ride (really like to get the V6 version of the Mazda, but they want crazy money).
Similarly priced and equipped, although I welcome corrections to those assumptions.

First and foremost, I want my car to be a good driver (too bad Sonata does not come with a manual tranny  :-\).

Before I drive both of these, I would appreciate comments from anyone who has driven either.  I keep my
cars for a long time  (10 years).

Thanks (I think) in advance!

First and foremost? Then you've already decided on the Mazda with a stick. :)

^ Agreed.

I was about to suggest a new Optima as I thought their SX trim came with a stick.  Guess not.   :-\   Used Infiniti G Sedan 6MT?  Used 335i?

I haven't tried one, but the Suzuki Kizashi Sport has a 6 speed manual and is apparently a very good handler.

! Yes. We need a Kizashi owner on the board somewhere.

If you plan to drive  25k+ a year then IMO a new DI with a turbo engine should NOT be on the list. Possible carbon build up on the valves is one of the reasons. I'd look at something drivable with a V6, like Altima or Fusion.

The Sonata is in no way a drivers car. The turbo is meant as a way to get V6 power without a V6. Nothing sporting about it at all.

Haven't driven the Mazda, but Mazda does seem to brew a little more sport into their cars

I second the Altima as a possible alternative available with a manual transmission.

Second the Kizashi. Could also look at the new Passat. Accord SE? Fusion? All those have stick.

I test drove the Kizashi and was blown away by it.  Would be our second car if we were in the market for one right now.  Test drove it back to back with the Altima 2.5 S.  No real comparison even with the added money for the Kizashi taken into account.

Wow...the Toronto Autoshow Suzuki display had no-one around it.  I wonder what you could get one of these for...apparently handles pretty well.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

You can find my thoughts on the Sonata 2.0T here:

I came from a V6 Altima with manual transmission and am very happy with the new ride.

When I was looking for a midsize sedan early this spring, I test-drove both of these cars. I was not overly impressed with the Mazda6 (especially in I4 configuration. V6, not as bad). I found it drove in kind of a boring way, and it was very overpriced. Nothing about it really stood out about it. It was very surprising and saddened, given our experience with our 2008 Mazda5. I really enjoyed the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. The engine was very powerful and the price was awesome for what you get (in Limited trim). The only downfall for me was the noise from the turbo engine. I have a 40 km commute each way on the highway and I found the engine was too noisy for me on an everyday basis. The Hyundai was definitely the driver's car though.
P.S. Try the Ford Fusion V6, I think you'll be surprised.
