Mazda5 or Mazda Tribute for a single guy?
« on: August 13, 2011, 08:34:17 pm »
Hi,
I like camping and cycling. I would carry my bike with me, hence need space. I am a tall guy and enjoy high seating position.
Mazda5 has more space inside once all back seats are folded down. Maybe, one might sleep there if too lazy/tired to set up a tent :)
But, Mazda5 is a minivan. What's it 'macho factor'? Any girls out here? What would you say about chances of a single guy who drives Mazda5?  ;)

If you look at the Mazda5 then also look at the Kia Rondo. If I remember correctly, the Mz5 doesn't have a perfect floor when you fold down the seats which makes is harder to sleep in the back. My buddy has the Rondo and his floor is perfect plus he took it one step further. He built up a bed for the back which you can still store boxes under, its a pretty sweet setup and if you do a lot of trips where you end up sleeping at a trail head, its a great setup. I"m sure the same thing could be done with the Mz5 though.

Also check out the Hyundai Elantra Touring, there is a lot of space in that wagon.

Not much macho in the Rondo, but it does have space and a great ~200 hp V6. I'd consider a midsize SUV. A Sorento is not a chick magnet per se, but I suppose they won't run away as far as from a Rondo or Mazda 5.  :rofl2:

What about an Element? Not the most attractive but definitely tall.

Thank you everyone for practical advice. Bottom line, as I see it: all practical minivans and SUVs have 'macho factor' close to zero, if not negative :(
Mazda5 appeals more to me than Rondo. The former is more technologically advance, and the styling is better. I'll let you know if I end up buying one.

I really like the Mazda5. I've never driven one, but Mazda gets huge points in my book for offering it with a manual transmission. Having a minivan with a stickshift must rate at least a notch higher on the "macho" scale, no?

And what about the Ford Transit Connect? I think that would be a neat vehicle for hauling around toys and even the odd night of sleeping in the back.

You need a Mini Cooper Clubman S.

That'll be $45k please. :)

Isn't a BC outdoors guy supposed to drive a shabby-chic Land Cruiser?

I liked the Mazda5 until I drove it...

Do tell.

I thought the 5 was supposed to be more fun to drive than the average minivan. Zoom-zoom and all that...

The Element is larger and has more utility.  The rear seats fold up and out of the way, fold flat, or can be removed for greater cargo options.  The interior is tall enough for most bikes to fit with wheels still fitted.

There's very few things I dislike more in life than people who worry about what others will think of his car. Grow a pair and buy the vehicle YOU want to buy that fits your needs. Stop worrying about others. Buy a pink Mazda5 if that's what you want. It's your car.

The Mazda 5 is a van and the Tribute is old.  How about something like a Mazda 3 Sport or a VW GTI and just get a set of roof racks for the times you need to transport the bike.
