BakFlip Tonneau
« on: August 10, 2011, 01:40:58 pm »
I am thinking of purchasing a BakFlip tonneau cover for my F150.  Anyone have any experience with these and how they hold up in Canadian winters?

I looked at a BackFlip cover a few years ago for the F150 - they seemed pretty sturdy in the aftermarket shop demo.  No idea how they do in -30C or with 2 feet of snow on them.  Ended up getting a used Access roll-up soft cover instead (I believe the Lorado model?) from a guy in Michigan.  It's been great - relatively easy to install, easy to open and seal, and no problems with warping/sagging when a load is placed on it.

I really like those hardcover roll up tonneaus, but man they're expensive and the hardware takes up quite a bit of room.

Now if I had a van or a cap how would I bring home that new fridge that I buy once every 10 years...

Thanks - will check out the Access.  Agreed re the hardcover roll ups: They look pretty good but you lose around a foot of space.

A van is freedom.

How so?  B/c van owners are obviously free from being controlled by what others think of them?

You can live in a van down by the river... A cargo van, dirtbike and a small cot. Freedom. Much harder to live in a truck with a tonneau or cap.

Hard tonneau covers like the Bakflip are great if you need security for your stuff. Soft tonneau like rollups don't have much security....anyone with a knife can get at your stuff. New soft covered rollups are typically in the $300-$500 range (low profile at the higher end). After it was installed, I have been pretty happy with my Truxedo Low Pro QT....installation was a bit of pain (didn't exactly match up with my truck...about 1/16 inch too wide. Cheaper rollups need to be manually adjusted for expansion/contraction. The Truxedo automatically adjusts after the first setup.

Check out jcwhitney.com for tonneau covers. I bought a TonnoPro soft folding cover for my truck and it was much cheaper shipped from there than it was to buy anywhere around here.

Would any of the members have the 4 strikers used to hold a OEM Tonneau Cover to the bed that they would want to sell?  Or maybe a lead on where I can get them besides FMC.  My local salvage yard does not have any ST in stock.

Have you tried contacting any local truck supply dealer for those clamps? They all appear to do the same with different designs.

AP I got the Ford roll top from my dealer - and I'd skip that if that's the kind you're looking for.  I thought (forgotten by now) it was a Truxedo model - but it's nowhere near as nice as the Truxedo roll top I had on my old Chevy.  Makes so much noise on the highway...I need to find some strong glue and vinyl strips and maybe if I glue it below the poles it'll shut up.  Getting the velcro straps from behind the box requires witches fingers or a stick...bloody annoying.  Maybe it's just a lower end model from them, but avoid it, spend a few bucks extra get the real thing.  Unless you're set on a hard one...then I can't (in ahead of Saf - "and refuse to"  ;D) help you.

I am glad you shared that Kev-vin.  Creeks and noises of that sort drive me nuts.  Plus, I lack witches fingers.

So I ended up going for a rollup soft cover instead.  I got the Truxedo Lo Pro QT.  I like the way it looks and it has kept the bed dry even in heavy rain.  Plus it comes with a lifetime warranty.

It was basically half the price of the BakFlip.  The primary benefit of the BakFlip over the Truxedo was security.  But I literally never leave anything valuable in the bed of the truck.

We're in the same boat, the only "valuables" left in the bed of our truck are bags of sand, or bales of hay...
So the lower-price roll-up cover works great, and was easy to install and use (ours is an Access Lorado I think, which was priced about the same as the Truxedo).  But I can see why folks with expensive tools/toys in the bed would want a hard cover.

I was looking at one of these as well, and I didnt like the fact it are of the back when folderd up, or if you put it up flat against the back window you lose visability.  I got an Access one and works great.  Not as secure as a hard top but way more versitle when hauling something tall
