hmm. time for me to get a new car? cooper s? bmw?
« on: August 05, 2011, 11:37:26 pm »
so, fate threw me a curve ball today.  flash rain flooded my apartment's parking pad.  my car is knee deep in water.

it's not the worst thing that's ever happened to me, but it's pretty close, the way i'm feeling right now.

positive side is, i may have to start looking for a new ride.

i'm not sure what to get or what i want.

i want at least the same amount of power i have(or power to weight, i suppose), got to be a manual.

preferably used...  :-)   (putting up a smiley is hard right now.  abstractly, i know it's nothing really significant compared to bigger things in life, but it's my car....  i love cars.. and it's the most expensive thing i own.  :-(   )

throw me some suggestions.   say, 20 to 30 grand max!
i looked around, and i can get 07 cooper s for around 17k.   or the other extreme would be 07 335 for 34k.   found a 09 gen coup for 24k, barely used...

just contemplating at the moment..      i'll have to talk to insurance first, see what they say, and also will have to have it professionally cleaned..

You're driving a Jetta, right? Do you still need a four-door? Are you looking for another enjoyable yet practical daily driver, or are you looking to step it up a notch?

If it's the former, I'd go to the States for a nice 328i. No need for Xdrive in Calgary, IMO. Keep it simple and pure - RWD, manual transmission and that sweet naturally aspirated inline 6.  Or how about another Jetta, but a GLI this time? The GTI is also a nice compromise between fun and practicality.

If you don't need a four door, I'd be looking at a 128i, RX-8, or maybe the Genesis coupe. If practicality really isn't an issue, a Miata or S2000 ( $$$ ?) would be a sweet drive. And I knew a guy who drove a Miata year-round in Banff and loved it.

GTI, 328i RWD stick, Genesis Coupe, G35/37...

All depends on what you're looking for I guess. ??? GTI would be a nice allround compromise.

I'm really sorry about your car being flooded.  :(

128i if you don't need 4 doors.  That motor is a gem and people love the manual.

On the other hand, if you prefer the 328 coupe style, and it's within what you're willing to pay, that would be another great option and you could get 4 doors too if you like that better.

I know the 328i has been reliable.  Only reason I'd hesitate a bit about the 335 you mentioned is because it's an 07.  And all 335's still have the HPFP issue, although it seems less frequent in the last couple of years.  I'd check service records to see how many pumps have been replaced...  if none have been replaced, it doesn't mean it won't happen but it seems those that have had them replaced often have repeat instances...  Mine has had no problem x 30,000 km.

Good luck....

all very good suggestions.   ;D

obviously, as we enthusiast think alike, most of the mentioned have crossed my mind.

since my gf has a 08 rabbit, practicality isn't huge issue, but it has to fit my golf club and snowboard. (that's my standard for practicality)

but getting it from US isn't in consideration.  (i misplaced my passport sometime in the last 3 years. .. never even knew it went missing..  it's probably somewhere in the apartment or in the city dump)

my buddy has 128, and it's sweet but i'm not sure.

i'm looking for rwd or awd(i've had only fwd till now)..   but new subi wrx is out of my budget.

GTI is the most sensible choice, i think, and the interior, oh my gawd...   but, i have jetta, gf has rabbit.. another vw?

so 335 still suffers from fuel pump?   damn...  that engine is so so so sweet though..

what do you guys think of e46 M3s or 330 zhp?  most of these are found with around 100k kms on them.   even sweeter I6 engines  ;)

...aujordhui ;)...Give me YER MONEY..I'll buy ya something NICE eh ................... :skid: :drive:   :shuffle: :stick:

thanks for the offer, saf, but if i had MONEY, i wouldn't agonize over so carefully about buying a car..  i would just go buy a new porsche and be done with it.   :P

If you want a WRX, buy used.  Lots of 07/08 WRX's around for not much more than $20-22K.

This is what I think.....

I haven't totally eliminated the idea of getting an E46 M3 rather than an E92, that's how much I like them.  But time is running out (age, mileage)

At those mileages, I think I would:

(a) research on E46 forums for common problems, likely less on the last year '05-'06 models.
(b) make sure it has a complete service history you can review
(c) find a good BMW independent garage near you and budget for some money on at least maintenance.

But you know what?  If you find a good model, it might be worth your time......

Good points, all, I would add to that, that some ppl should never be BMW (or Porsche, etc) owners in that they ignore required maintenance and/or won't pay for it. Avoid any car owned by this type of person....no questions asked. BMWs demand to be maintened properly, without it, they can become a real probleml.

so, i went and test drove an M3.

01, 90k km on it, Laguna Seca blue.   gorgeous car.....   :o   dealers asking 28k out the door.

originally from Ont.

some trim pieces show wear and tear. (one would expect that, but my jetta with 116k km is immaculate inside.....)
trunk handle cover piece is loose....  and the car's battery was dead when i tried starting it.

once the booster came out, though, here are my thoughts :

shoot... gotta leave the office.  so to be continued.

i'm back.
so, the salesguy starts the car, and it fires right up.   to be absolutely honest, it was underwhelming, the exhaust note when starting. 128 sounds nicer.

steering in parking lot speed, pretty heavy but about par with my jetta.
less loosy feeling though.   the car was wearing dunlop wintersports on comp package wheels.  (can you imagine the costs on 19" winters?)
steering wheel felt great in my hands.

clutch was even heavier than my jetta.  (which is heavy compared to my brother's civic)
not much feel in the clutch (i thought that was weird) but takeup was crisp. almost stalled it once.  it took up so quick..  maybe it's aftermarket clutch?

shifter.  first was a little hard to get into.  and at slow speeds, i wasn't changing gear fast enough for m3, clutch kept catching out and engine had to be revved to make smooth shift. pretty heavy shifter too.

brakes, couldn't tell ya.  it was normal.  i didn't do crazy things during the 15-20 min test drive.

so in couple minutes, i merged onto highway 2 with 100 limit.  once i was under way, the first thing i noticed was how heavy the car felt.
jetta feels heavy compared to civic.
golf/rabbit feels even heavier compared to my mk4, but the m3 felt even heavier-er.  that may have had something to do with making the car feel so stable.

few minutes more later, when rev limiter was raising itself to 7500 rpm, the salesperson told me to change into 3rd and boot it on off ramp.    NICE.  it kept accelerating thru the curve and didn't lean at all. (even with winter tires....  19"s..)

even in 4th, going 60ish, when i put the pedal to the metal it surged forward at the rate that is comparable to my jetta doing that in 3rd with turbo on full boil.
it felt nice having the power.

the seats felt comfortable enough. (for 20 minutes)

now, the negatives.   interior is just ok.  could definitely use some TLC.  it wasn't neglect, but it wasn't love either the way interior looks.  at least everything works.

front fog light, they arn't same on both sides...  what's up with that?

rear trunk handle..  like mentioned above.  loose.
driver side mirror is separating glue from the reflective surface..  just the bottom edge, but ...
side turn signal light housing on front fender has yellowed from sun damage, i suppose.. (my jetta's is crystal...), some hazing in the rear light cluster as well.
was in an accident in Ontario.  (damage, $800....  who reports accidents under $1000 anyway?)

and no service history.  car is reportedly safetied by the dealership and is currently in good running condition, but noway to tell what was or wasn't done.

i'm gonna pass on this car, even though the color is mesmerizing.maybe for 19k, but for 28k, no.

Good call, I'd pass on this car too.  This doesn't seem a car that was well-taken care of by its owner.  Like you, I keep my cars looking good as long as I have them and I maintain full records.

If you had time, I'd suggest that you get it off a BMW enthusiast (through a local BMW club or private sale).  But it would be difficult if you're under time pressure.

A new VW would also have the modern conveniences/ improvements/ new car smell.

With an inspection, I'd be tempted to offer $18K on that car.  It's obviously had a bit of a tougher life, but for the right price I might take a chance on it.

Of course, they figure it's a gem, and they'll sit on it for years if they have to.

Back in March of 2008, I saw a 2001 Forester identical to mine, expect with 150K on it (Mine was over 200K...) and I thought about buying it.  The dealer was asking a stupid $15K for it (what I paid for mine back in 2004 with well under 100K on it) and I offered them $7K for it, which was a pretty fair price.

They laughed.  Well, they STILL HAVE that Forester, and last time I saw it they were a stupidly high $10K (it's worth $4-5K now) and still no one will touch it.

yeah, for 18k, i might go for it as well..  the color is so pretty...  but they would probably laugh and escort me out of the premise.

before my appointment with the salesperson, the dealership sales mgr or someone called me and said that the sales guy was an enthusiast to the brand and they look forward to having me.  which i thought was very nice.

when i got there, though, the saleperson was not familiar with the car, acted a little aloof..  saying this car is very inexpensive, and that he just sold 90k m3 and that i can't expect perfection on 2001 m3.   that put me off a lot..   it's not like i cannot afford payment on new bmw..  i just don't want to have that, and i don't have rich parents or rich significant other that buy me things.

Inexpensive?  The car is almost 11 years old!!  They are full of crap.  True an 11 year old car won't be perfect, but for $28K, it should be a 100pt concours example.  These cars are available in the US for $16K in cherry condition, so for an extra $10-12K, I want absolute perfection.  What is that..?

1. Pristine condition
2. Impeccable records

This car is/has neither.

However, in Calgary, there are probably buyers for this car at that stupid price.  Sometimes it seems to me that Calgarians revel in paying too much for things in some sort of stupid game of "I paid too much 'cause I have sooooo much money!!"
