My new BMW 328 Xdrive
« on: August 02, 2011, 04:07:48 pm »
I finally pulled the trigger and got a BMW. I am a logical and very frugal person so this purchase was hard to do. It is not logical or frugal. But my wife and I drove my friend's BMW down in Florida for 3 months and fell in love with the drive.

I am still trying to get my head around no dipstick, run flat tires, 24,000kms between oil changes, no tire rotation, no jack and everything else. But I love the car.

It is a new 2011 328 XDrive classic with premium package. Auto, Sunroof, Heated steering wheel & Blue Tooth. Black interior. Nothing over the top as far as BMW's go but I love it and it is a real treat for me to own. I never thought I would see the day I would own a BMW.

Just got it yesterday.
Living my BMW dream.

Mine had a dipstick.    I had the oil & filter ** changed every 8000 kms at the dealer so there would be no argument ever about warranty.   The first time the service manager harangued me for 15 minutes that it was not required. I pointed out that I was PAYING for this and not trying to get it under the ( worthless) free maintenance and he gave up. Did not have trouble again. After the first two years or warranty I started going to an indy shop in TO.
It makes me feel better that an engine has fresh oil every 8000 kms.

the things you have trouble with are mostly but not all,  the same reasons why I did not buy another BMW.

** I don't know about the newer engines but on my 2003 you could not really tell if the filter was changed but I suspect it was as most technicians when given a w/o to do a job will just do it.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

+1 to that. 24k between oil changes is just playing with fire.

Slybry, congrats!!!  Beautiful, love the white.  And I think the facelifted 3-series sedan is handsome.

You are also getting one at the mature end of the cycle, with all the kinks worked out.  The 328 has had excellent reliability.

I know you will enjoy it for many, many years.

If you are worried about long-term longevity, you can write Bimmer Magazine for a copy of their "old school maintenance schedule" (it's free, just have to write the editor an e-mail).  It's not posted on the internet because it's copyrighted and goes through periodic updating...        :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :skid: :skid: :skid:

Congrats, slybry, the Alpine White is so nice on most BMWs.

Just change the oil/filter more often than BMW recommends/pays for. You get one free oil service every 12 months regardless of kms driven. Change the oil/filter initially at about 3-4000kms, then again at one year or about 12000kms. If you are paying (outside the BMW-paid services, don't have the oil calculator reset, let it run).

In olden times, ppl used to check their gas supply with a dip stick as well. Then fuel guages came along, and few relied on them. Over time, technology improved and the doubters ceased to doubt. As with the electronic dipstick. I don't worry about it any more.

Man, there's some serious new-car fever on the forums lately.  :)  That is a seriously sweet ride, and I can't imagine anything more logical than buying a car you really enjoy.

Congrats. Excellent choice.

Stock up on Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (make sure its the Made in Germany variety) and as others have said change it more often.

12k is probably alright. Should take 6.5L per change.

Also make sure you wind out the engine every so often. The (more or less) same engine in the Z4 gets grumpy if you don't get it properly warmed up.

Congrats! I would take one of those in a heartbeat if I didn't already own one of the older variety already that needs to be run to the ground before the upgrade.
