Hard plastics - Toyota
« on: August 01, 2011, 10:50:43 pm »
Went to look at a Venza the other day (nice discounts right now). I was surprised by how shallow the trunk area is, must be that gigantic spare wheel hiding under there. The other thing that surprised me is the sea of hard plastics in the cabin, e.g., seems like the entire door is covered in this hard plastic. The rest of the models in the showroom weren't any better. Even my lowly 2003 Protege5 has a much nicer feeling interior (not necessarily design) than what Toyota has now. Are other makes following the same approach?

Man you haven't seen the Sienna!!  Toyota has reached an all time low in their interiors both plastics and fabrics :hurl:

Why is this topic in Moan & Whine?  According to the forum's description, this forum is for posts which follow these criteria:

"Have a Lemon you want to complain about? Get it off your chest here, just don't expect too much sympathy"
All I'm reading here is someone's general observation about the quality of Toyota interiors.

Cheap hard plastic - cheap soft plastic - expensive hard plastic - unless you feel a need to fondle it what's the difference?

I had mine coated in the optional mink. :)

Are other makes following the same approach?

My mother's 2007 Toyota Yaris door panels and other parts are hard plastic. They scratch easily. And this was the top of the line model.

As good as our Toyotas and Honda have been, I'll be looking elsewhere. Not North American or Asian...so you can figure that out easily enough.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Now if the Europeans could just figure out the reliability thing we'd have the perfect car...... ;)

My four wheeled BMW was trouble-free. The BMW that my friend bought new, an '85 325e, is still on the road as a daily driver.

As for my two wheeled BMWs, they've taken me all over the place since 1991...also trouble-free.

I can't complain and they drive right.

Yes and no. Soft plastics are back in and many car companies are working much harder on the interior materials. Years of hard plastics from nearly all of the makes will do that. The luxury cars are obviously a different story.

Toyota has fallen somewhat but when the new Camry is revealed we should see if they have picked their game up or not. The next gen Camry is supposed to mark the beginning of a return to higher quality interiors... maybe :)

I should put you in touch with a friend of mine who had a BMW 750iL. Absolute money pit. I would have expected better of a Pony or Pinto.

In fact, of the friends of mine who have bought high end German, only one bought a second.

I can understand that reasoning , also if dealer who is able to work on it  is not within a 20 km drive I am not buying it

Sometimes I wonder if it isn't the owner. I've listened to the same co-workers complain about the reliability of their cars and thats after each of them having owned a few different brands. I'm starting to wonder if its the car or the owner.

The only cars I had constant issues with were my first car, a used Ford Capri and my second car, a new Ford Mustang. Since then I've driven mainly Asian cars and have never had an issue with any of them, plus one BMW, also issue free.

The best any-brand car is the one that costs you practically nothing to run after 15 years of ownership.
