Corolla XRS is over three years old! Three year review.
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:31:11 am »
My car: 2009 Corolla XRS
Distance: Over 30k

The Good
- The Corolla had more usable space in the car, especially for the driver, than most of the cars that I drove in the same class. The situation has probably changed with the Elantra and Cruze out but the Corolla is still well sized. Not too big but also not too small in my opinion.
- Looks quite good (subjectively) with the 2009+ styling and the extra body kit for the S/XRS model. It’s aged well versus the newest cars in the line-up as well. I was parked next to a brand new Elantra the other day and didn’t feel embarrassed. The spoiler is practically useless but tasteful and doesn’t detract from the rearward vision at all.
- The interior is full of hard plastics but they have worn well so far. Only a few scratches where I put the keys in (and miss :)) and on the lower door panels. Even then they are small scratches and they aren't really noticeable.
- Switchgear is absolutely solid. All of the buttons work exactly as well as they did the day I got the car. Some cars have cheap switchgear (they flop around or don't fit properly) and it's one of the things that really bugs me. Not Audi or Lexus good but better than most others I’ve sat in.
- The interior itself may not have soft plastics that everyone loves so much but the bits and pieces are pretty solid despite the abuse that the car has sustained.
- The XRS and LE models in 2009 had the “optitron” LED backlight gauges. These are white and orange rather than the all-orange of the CE and S models. They look great, are readable and have a wonderful sweep when you turn on the car. I still love that!
- Fuel economy isn’t as good as in johngenx’s Corolla CE review. The XRS is heavier and has a 2.4L engine. Despite this it’s still quite good. At 8.6L/100km according to the computer over a 6 month period the car has great economy. That was with a mix of highway and city driving.
- The 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine is a great engine. It’s now starting to age technology wise and is being phased out. At 158hp and 162ft/lb of torque it’s a great amount of power for the size and weight of the car. The rated numbers are 7.9 seconds to 100kph which isn’t super fast but much nicer than the 9 and 10 second numbers of the other cars I was test driving. The torque is the really important part here as it’s fantastic in city situations where speed is not too important but getting up to speed quickly is. It’s great on the highway too.
- Handling for the XRS is decent in my estimation. The XRS has reinforced suspension, strut towers, and a more complex EPS steering system than the other models. It’s not winning any races but in practical situations it’s useful enough that I have some fun with it. Cornering is flatter than anything else I've driven. Not as fun as the Mazda3 or the Golf but decent enough. I do have some complaints... see below.
- Steering is very good and has a fair bit of weight behind it. Because it's a different unit no doubt because of the bigger rims and thicker tires it has a very different feel than a Corolla CE (which I've driven - that feels loose and limp). Not a lot of feedback like most EPS units but compared to the base models it’s much better.
- The brakes grab quickly (all disc units on the XRS) and consistently. Had to make a few emergency stops and my biggest concern has never been what was ahead of me but if the guy behind could stop as fast as I could. You do have to give them a little push to get them going but there isn't much dead area before they start to become effective.
- It has the gooseneck hinges which intrude into the cargo space. I’m used to them from previous vehicles so it's not as disappointing as it could have been.

The Bad
- This car has had its share of rattles. While interior quality is good in essentially every other aspect the rattles definitely take my opinion down a notch. I’ve had the rear window replaced (it was ill fitted apparently) and a couple of other rattles fixed at various times. It’s still got some but I don’t hear them so much during the spring, summer and fall. During the winter there are some annoying ones.
- The clock is essentially nowhere to be seen on the 2009 models. There is one on the gauge cluster but you can have that, or temperature, or fuel economy but not any of those at the same time. The passengers are up the creek when it comes to time unless they ask me (or check their phone ;)). Toyota corrected it for the 2011 models.
- The suspension when I first got it was hard. It’s loosened up just a tad and it’s great now but during the first winter on the all season tires it was sometimes jarring over some of the rougher roads. It’s still not the smoothest car but the good handling does come at a price.
- The stock tires are low profile all seasons. Good tires in everything except freezing conditions which ice and snow where they don’t hold up so well. Had a few scary incidents which prompted me to get winter tires this past winter which was a great decision. The car handles well enough in the snow on winters but with the stock tires it was not a great experience.

The Ugly
- I think the designers got tired after making a decently inoffensive and yet slightly attractive car. They put on these horrible round reflectors at the back that just don’t match very well with the rest of the car. For 2011 they replaced them with much more tasteful ones units (but decided to make the rest of the car ugly).
- Like every car it gets scratches and gets beaten up a bit from time to time. There are some battle scars from being in parking lots with careless door openers. The worst damage it's sustained was a week ago with a unfortunately placed rock that I couldn't see but definitely hit. We'll see how much that costs me but it might be most of the front clip unfortunately.

On the whole
It’s my first car and I paid the money for it so I suppose I may like it better than if one of you drove it. It’s no BMW or Lexus and it’s not a Civic Si or a Golf GTI. It’s a middle of the road compact car with great dimensions and a lot of practicality. It has enough sporting pretensions for me to have some fun with it and when I need to be buttoned up and sensible it’s just fine for that too. If I had more money other cars would definitely be on the table instead of this one. Nonetheless, for the goals I had set out, this was the right car for me to buy at the time.

It’s been on out of province road trips, to the beach, helped people move and more. It isn't the perfect car but I think it has more than served it's purpose so far. I think more than anything it has grown on me. It started out as a great purchase and then I had a love hate affair with it and now it's settled into the understanding that this is my car, that it's a good car and that it's more than doing its job.

Any Corolla questions... just ask!

Well thought out review....fair and dispassionate. It's nice to read a post like this after all the fanboy stuff you see on here.

Ice and Fire,

Great review.  I'm still very nostalgic about my old Corolla.  Yes, it was a boring-mobile, but it was very dependable and practical.  It felt like a very good value.

It's not the 0-60 numbers, etc....  and it's not even what the reviews say.  I think it's more how you felt about a car when you had it, if it suited your needs at the time, if it was the one you wanted among your competitors, if you felt you like your money was well spent, etc.

I hope your car continues to give you good memories overall.  Sounds like it has been the right purchase for you.

p.s.  Oh, those optitron lights - they're awesome.  I still think they're awesome, lol.  They were soothing... with a touch of refinement.  We didn't have those on the Corolla but we did on the Camry.

Well thought out review....fair and dispassionate.

The Corolla was meant as good reliable basic transportation and over its entire production life, has always been that.

It's nice to read a post like this after all the fanboy stuff you see on here.

And mostly in magazines...the usual trumpet blowing session so often seen...or they might not get other cars to test next time.

Nice review, IceAndFire. Having had some experience with Corollas myself, I find some of your comments interesting. We had a Corolla CE loaner a few months ago and a rental before that, plus we had a wonderful '94 Corolla in the family for many years. That car was amazing - after 15 years and 90,000 kms it was still solid as a rock and never once needed anything other than regular maintenance. It was literally built like a small Lexus with tight tolerances all around and excellent materials including a soft-touch dash, door-panels and armrests. When we sold it off last year it still looked almost brand-new. Fantastic car, I've regretted selling it ever since. :(

The loaner and rental Corollas, both '08s, were a completely different story. They didn't look or feel nearly as well bolted-together as the old '94 and the interior materials were inferior with hard plastic everywhere. Like yours, they both rattled incessantly and neither one had the 'Toyota feel' so obvious in the '94.

The XRS is definitely the most attractive Corolla, yours looks very nice indeed. I'm glad it's met your expectations.

Really good review my man.  Candid long-term owner feedback is valuable information.  I'm glad the car has worked out well for you, and proved to be the right choice for you.  My question:  if you had to replace it today, would you make the same purchase, or have there been other cars that have more caught your fancy?  I mean something that is realistically within your budget - not "I'd SO get a Veyron!"  Unless a Veyron is within your budget, of course.

Great review and very similar to my observations of my 2010 Corolla LE. Gearheads have problems facing the facts that most people cannot afford and do not need a 400 hp car, and that cars that cost $20k do not have the interior of cars that cost double that.

My Corolla gives the impression that it will last practically forever. Mechanically, it is very sound and very well engineered for reliability. It was a great deal for the money and I am sure Toyota will sell loads of Corollas until long after I have departed this world.

Glad my review was useful and enjoyable! I find the reviews that you get of a car when you drive it for a few days differs from when you've owned the thing and sat in it day in and day out and actually used the car.

@Jaeger: Great question! I have asked myself that too. If I had to replace it today I think my short list would still be in the same segment but I'm not entirely sure what I would pick. I know I'd be test driving the Elantra and the Focus for sure. The Focus in particular sounds appealing as the performance, by the numbers, is close to my XRS but with much better fuel economy. Secretly I'm hoping that the next gen Fusion remains roughly the same size as the current car but picks up more of the Euro styling of the Fiesta, Focus and CMax... that could be my next car too.

There is nothing wrong with the Corolla but I think at this point it's become dated technology wise and life is too short to own the same car again. So when my XRS has had it's time and I'm ready to move on then I'll almost certainly pick a different vehicle. That's what I'm saying now anyways :)

It's a tough segment with lots of competition, but for us, the Corolla won thanks to the following factors:

1. We didn't even see any Nissan products as the dealer sales personnel were so aggressive we literally ran away.
2. The Honda Civic seats were uncomfortable from the first minute in the car, and only the LX trim offered split folding seats (a MUST have for us), so the price was $4K more than a well equipped Corolla.
3. In March of 2008, the Hyundai offerings were pretty tepid, and my wife found nothing compelling about them.
4. Rusting Mazda3s scared her, but we did look at them.  The seat/dash/window relationship didn't suit her, and the pricing was also higher than the Toyota given the required features.  (recall that Toyota dropped the price in 09, slowly raising it over the last 3 years, we paid $20K ALL in)
5. Focus and all other Fords were still the old Ford products.
6. She wouldn't go near the GM dealer, and I understood why.
7. The Impreza, my personal fave, was more $$, offered more power, but no where near the fuel economy, and our experiences with Subaru show that while I love them, they're far from cheap to maintain.  Parts are heinously expensive and the dealers are the worst of the worst.  Also, the missus looks at the insurance bill for the 11 yr old Forester and figures we're going to be bent over big time for a new Scoob.
No place I'd rather be...

My question:  if you had to replace it today, would you make the same purchase.

And that is the bottom line as to how satisfied one is with a vehicle, especially after long term ownership...and I really mean long term.

Without giving it a second thought, I'd buy a Honda CR-V again after 12 years of ownership...IF they came in a diesel. I'm tired of 10 liters per 100 kilometer consumption...city or highway.

I would buy another GTI.  It would be my fourth one.  I owned the 1st one for 8 years, the 2nd for 5 yrs and this one...which is the best of the lot I'll probably replace when the Golf VII appears.  Some cars just fit me and it is too much effort to find some other brand which might so do...and I don't have many  cars left in me.

I would buy another GTI.

I drove a 1st generation one and all it was was trim/colour/seat changes back then. One thing for sure was the "grin factor" and I can imagine how much better they are now.

KIA sent me a form letter answer to why we can't get a Sorento here with the 2.2 liter diesel that I was in while in Europe. A piddly 4 cylinder, 2.2 liter diesel and we were hardly reving at 190...about 300 rpm more than my CR-V revs at 100.

GTI is another car I forgot to mention above. That'd be a vehicle I'd be interested in owning in the future potentially. For the last couple of generations I've liked the looks and sitting in one is very comfortable. Seems like a great performance/utility compromise to me.

You know, you really have to ask yourself if you need and SUV and AWD. I ski a lot and I have found a good FWD sedan with top notch winter tires does just fine and with quite reasonable fuel economy.
