Custom Air Boat
« on: July 28, 2011, 01:29:31 am »
Thought some of you might find this pretty cool.  I certainly do.

My Father-in-Law began building a custom air boat a couple years back, and recently had it at the lake while we were on vacation for two weeks.  He has changed the hull design, motor (several times), and prop since he started, but I'll give you some details as it sits now.  I think he is done tinkering.

To begin, 100% of the fabrication was done by himself, including the hull, steering components, framework, etc.  He also fabricated such items as the exhaust headers and drive belt cover (notice it is even louvered).  The majority of the boat is aluminum (hull, framework, etc.).  The tandem axle aluminum trailer was also put together by himself.

The boats power comes from a 350 Chevy out of his '99 pickup.  The last motor he had in it was a 4.3, however he recently put a crate motor in his truck and swapped the 350 to the boat.  He added Edelbrock intake and carb, and a high lift cam.  As mentioned previously, he fabbed the headers himself and finished with Dynomax exhaust which exit out the transom.  He ordered the prop from a shop in Florida (go figure).

How does it go?  Faster than any boat I've been on, as far as acceleration goes.  It lifts out of the water near instantly at full throttle.  I'm estimating than he's only taken it to 50mph or so, as he is still leary of its handling (and a bit scared of the water to begin with).  However, the engine is under light throttle at that speed.  I can't guess at its top speed, but it would be faster than most things on the water.  It's a rather cool experience riding in it, as you can cruise as near to the shoreline as you like with less than a foot of water under your feet.  It doesn't handle waves well with the flat hull design, but feels stable on smooth water.  I think once the FIL gets accustomed to the handling, he could have a lot of fun with it.

How does it sound?  At idle, fairly quiet and a bit lumpy with a slight "whirr" from the prop.  Under open throttle, it sounds like an airplane and damn loud depending on which way the prop is oriented to the listener.  The amount of water it mists behind the prop at open throttle is amazing.

I meant to take a video of it but forgot my camera every time he had it at the beach.  He'll have it at the lake again this weekend, so I'll try and get something on video and post it.

He's been in autobody his whole life, and currently manages a truck body shop.  He's got a couple of nice cars; a custom '29 Ford roadster and a '64 Olds convertible.  He's not afraid to attempt anything, and the airboat was just one of his recent creations.  The louvers on the belt shroud and on the hood of his truck were done by a machine that he built.  He's actually also an accomplished woodworker, and a good portion of the furniture in my home was crafted by himself.  I wish I had his skills and drive.  A very talented man.

Yea, my dad is similarly skilled in woodworking.  From exquisite furniture to toys, he can do it all.  He's even lending a hand in the restoration of the Lancaster Bomber and Mosquito.

I wish I could do autobody.  Would round out my mechanical skills nicely.. ;D

I'll do my best to get a vid this weekend as mentioned.  The bench seat was fabbed by himself.  Its quite comfortable.  He's also got two other seats further to the front that a typical boat seats.  You can see them in the first picture, one of them is folded down.

Haven't had any complaints about noise, yet.  Most people are just in awe of it, and he's gets a lot of compliments and questions.  The lakes we go to aren't typically busy lakes, and when he takes it out its usually only for an hour or so.  More of a toy.  Once he gets a fair distance away from the beach you can't hear it anyway.  Its not like he zips back and forth along the front of the beach with it.

I've uploaded a video of the boat, albeit poor quality.  All I have is a Canon point and shoot.  The first little bit of the vid is just a slow drive by, followed by a couple of take offs.  Wish the quality was better, and that I had taken a video while on the boat.  Ah well, maybe next time.  Make sure the volume is up  :).  1:55 in has the best footage of take off.

Cool.
The neat thing about air boats is that you can use them year round - they work well on the ice covered lakes and with snow as well!
My Dad use to build them with his cousins back pre-ski-doo days. Actually, they built early Ski-Doos as well. I have 8mm (predating Super 8) film of them in action. I shoudl transfer all that stuff to digital. Anyone know how?

One other note.  I was observing the tach while cruising at approximately 50mph (best guesstimate), and it was sitting at 3000rpm.  Lots of throttle left.

@ Railton, It'd be really cool to see those films!
