Should have kept going.  I see bikes doing over 200 all the time not much the cops can do because they can't really chase.

So you have no problem with someone going twice the posted speed limit? Where would you draw the line, or would you draw one at all? Sheesh..... ::)

Yeah, like the morons I've seen on crotch-rockets weaving in-and-out of traffic, doing wheelies at highway speeds and threading lanes are responsible enough to make that decision.... ??? ::)

I think it's crazy and stupid, but it's so common to me this isn't news.

The news is not that he was doing 170, that's quite common but that he was fined close to $4500.

Is that up in the Chicoutimi area of Quebec?   The Surete do not like speeders.

There's a place and time for everything. You'd be surprised how deserted the 401 is in the early morning. :)

It says he ran 4 stop signs and had no licence. The speed isn't the news here.

A couple weeks ago, Mrs Minou and I are driving on the 13 south in the Dorval/Lachine area of Montreal on a quiet Saturday morning when we encounter an SQ CV doing radar on our side of the road.  Didn't think much of it. Seconds later a sport bike passes us weaving between lanes at a "moderate" 150 clics or so.

I said, how come the radar didn't clock him when the trooper comes from behind lights on at the same speed.  He had no chance unless the biker stopped or was caught further down the road by an other patrol car.  And there was many escape routes in the area.

Oh yes they can!  The Sun just posted this today:

They attempted to evade the helicopter by entering the underground parking at Metrotown Mall off Kingsway Avenue but were stopped by members of the Greater Vancouver Integrated Road Safety Unit moments later as they left the underground via the Central Avenue exit. The drivers were ticketed .

They had the right idea .They would have gotten away if they got off their bikes and walked the mall, grabbed some lunch, killing an hour .
These copters can't read your plate .

"Best description I got for you is... it's a crotch rocket"

So do they have a radar on that chopper or do they just approx the speed?

Some roads (like the 401) have big painted bars on them.  The pilots time how long it takes the vehicle to go from bar to bar.  They take that time and look on their nifty little chart and it tells them how fast you are going.  If there are no painted bars, they may use a distance between known overpasses.  If it take X seconds to go between the known distance, you are traveling Y speed.

I see that helicopter has FLIR (forward looking infra red).  Not sure if it can record speed however.

FWIW....170km/h on a sportbike isn't even trying....
