This is why the car continues to sell...people like your missus.  People who want dead reliable, cheap and economical.
 ....

I agree....but not for the same reasons.

The reason they sell is that people BELIEVE what popular opinion is. There is nothing in his report that I couldn't report in my Protege5 or even in my mother in-law's 2006 Malibu.

Well it's more than popular "opinion".  The Corolla has been beyond reliable.  That's truth, not opinion.  Parts are extremely cheap.  Again...fact, not opinion.  And the car is extremely frugal to run...both  to buy, on insurance and on gas.  And those are also facts.

Exactly correct.

Many "facts" are just interpretation.  Recall that the world was flat at one time!  It was a popular opinion the late 70's that Japanese cars were scrap. It was also popular opinion that the Japanese couldn't build a car to compete head on with Mercedes.

My point is that there are lots of choices put there now that give you way more car than the Corolla. It will take a while for the masses to catch up.

Well, you know how it is. They have to keep perpetuating the mythology. We are seeing it now being created for another brand from across the Pacific.
