Buying a Car - Private Sale - What steps ?
« on: July 24, 2011, 09:41:13 am »
Hey guys (it's different out here after a long time)

Anyhow, I have decided to bite again and buy a car. I am checking a few today and buying today.

There is no sticky post with simple run down of things to do.

Any pointers?

Cars I am looking at are all safetied and e-tested.
Should I demand a UVIP package from the seller?
Sign the sale receipt.
Transfer Ownership tomorrow.

I don't have license plates(I returned the plates when my car got totalled)
MTO is not open today. (I suppose I could drive the car to a parking lot and mount the plates tomorrow)
No Vehicle insurance policy.

Anything else to do with the seller? :)

Any advice appreciated.

Driving even just a few hundred yards with no plates and no insurance is guaranteed to attract the Popo like flies to garbage.  You only have to wait until 09:01 tomorrow.

A private seller must give you the UVIP with the Bill of Sale portion completed and signed, and the “Vehicle Portion” of the Registration Permit with the “Application for Transfer” section completed and signed. Don't be talked into buying the UVIP when you get to the MTO to register the car. If you discover a branded title or lien it will be too late, the seller will be gone with your money.

He should also give you a unexpired Safety Standards Certificate and a valid Drive Clean Vehicle Emissions Inspection Report confirming a “pass test” result.

You have six days from the purchase date to register the car with the MTO. Take the UVIP, “Application for Transfer,” Safety Standards Certificate, Drive Clean Vehicle Emissions Inspection Report, Liability Insurance slip, your Driver's License, the “Plate Portion” of your permit and enough money for the registration fee and the sneaky new McGuinty used car 13-percent Ontario Retail Sales Tax (RST) calculated against the greater of UVIP wholesale value or actual selling price.

Umro, any reason you have to rush?  It's tough to have leverage to negotiate when you don't have time.

I've sold a car privately and did what Gardiner Westbound mentioned (as the seller).

I always have a used vehicle inspected by your mechanic PRIOR to purchase. Service records would be very helpful especially if off warranty.

Welcome back, Umro.

Don't try driving it without plates.  That's asking for a lot of trouble should you get stopped by the cops.  Even getting temporary plates is better than no plates.

1999 Mazda 626 LX V6 2.5L Auto - $2200 (Pvt Sale)

Why the rush?
I need the car to respond to work related issues. Lots of new IT projects going on.

Did not get the car inspected by a mechanic, took a more knowledgeable friend with me. Car checks out decent enough.

Got the UVIP, safety, transfer done super smooth. Owner was kind enough to install the plates for me using zip ties. I forgot any tools. :D

Car is home, needs interior cleaned, doesn't look like to be vacuumed for months.
Exterior is little bit paint issues, a bit peeling off at the front of the hood (Is that related to that 'thin Mazda paint'?)

Where the hell I have been?

I live in downtown Toronto. I figured out quite late that I can get around without a car. I am more healthy because of that, I can actually run (chased down the street car to the next stop few times :P )
Since the Intrepid died in December, just zipping around town using Zip Car (wonderful service for downtowners) and zipping out of town using rentals. Drove about 20 different models.

Fun Fact(my opinion i.e. ;) ) : Honda Civic is THE car to beat for a decent (4 people) family car.

I'll post pics soon. I have my own car now.

Congrats on the new ride.

I steam cleaned the interior of my used Civic after I bought it.  It was pretty dirty inside.  Let me know if you want to borrow my deep carpet cleaning machine and service.
