Tire recommendation for Nissan X-Trail (P215/65R16)
« on: July 23, 2011, 11:52:25 am »
It's time to replace all four tires on my wife's Nissan X-Trail AWD.

We're looking for an SUV-oriented all-season tire.  The original OEM tire size is P215/65R16, which is an unusual size for an SUV (this is more commonly found on passenger cars).

The OEM tires were Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts which were crap (no grip, no treadlife).  The first set of replacement tires were Costco specials, Michelin X Radials, and were so-so (fine for 3 seasons, but no great hell in winter).

Can anyone recommend a good replacement tire in the stock size?

Of course we could go with a different size tire too, if it means getting a better set.  Not sure what alternative size would be the best bet in this case.  Any recommendations there?

If the 1010tire moderator has some great ideas, we'd really appreciate 'em.

Thanks.

(We're not looking for separate summer and winter sets, so pls don't bother pitching those ideas.)

My Forester runs the same summer size.  (I use a 15" winter tire on a steel wheel)  I do take the Scoob on rough roads and some difficult crap in the summer, but I still run a V-rated tire as I prefer the better handling on pavement.

Right now I'm using the Bridgestone G019 "Grid" tire and I'm pretty impressed.  Technically, it's an all-season, but of course, is useless in the snow, like every other all-season.  It has superb wet performance and is surprisingly quiet and decent riding considering the V-rating.
No place I'd rather be...

It doesn't look like the Bridgestone G019 Grid is available in 215/65R16.

It seems that 235/60R16 is very close in overall diameter to the stock size.  The Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S is available in that size.  I've had great luck with Yokos before on my other cars.  Would I have any problems with rim width going from 215 to 235?

Also 225/65R16 is pretty close to stock size, but the tire choices don't seem much better.

I bought mine last spring, (2010) so I guess the size was dropped.  Bummer.

As for going to a 235, I don't know what the width of the stock rim is.  A concern might be the clearance with struts, etc, but I bet it fits.

put new rubber on the wifes Xtrail, she has the Adventure so they were 215 60 17, they were H speed rated , but I bought a set of Falkens with a T rating, no biggy according to 1010 where I bought them. I went Falkens this time because of the high UTQG rating, because it ate through the last set of Toyo Versado's I put on it..

I finally had a moment to check the owners manual for the rim width.  It's 6-1/2JJ.

Would there be a fitment problem going from 215 to 235 on that rim width?

225/60R16 is listed as an alternate size on TireTrend's website. ;)

Yokohama Tire USA offers the Geolandar A/T-S in 215/65R16, but Yokohama Tire Canada does not (the closest match from them is 235/60R16).  This is not the first time I've noticed this (annoying) greater selection in the U.S. vs Canada.

Now, I know I can always order a set of tires from a U.S. retailer like Tire Rack or Discount Tire.  But if I contacted Yokohama Canada or a Canadian retailer, would they be able to source a set of 215s as well?  Has anyone ever tried this?

Discount Tire Direct has choices for 215/65/16s.  They offer free shipping to Canada as well.

We've decided to order the Geolandars from Tire Rack and have them installed locally.  Pretty much the same price as Discount Tires, all in.  No local tire shops could get Yokohama Canada to supply them in the size we need.  Tire Rack pre-arranges customs clearance, duties and sales taxes through UPS in advance, so (with luck) we shouldn't have any nasty surprises at delivery.

Gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed that none of the 1010tires administrators ever bothered to chime in here.  I started this thread ages ago, asking them for some guidance.  Got nothing.

I think they've given up.

Can't say as I blame them: everyone ends up buying tires in the States anyway, so why bother?

Well, not me.  I bought a set of four rims and tires for my Miata not long ago from them.

But if they've given up, they've given up...
