1999 Honda Civic SiR
« on: July 19, 2011, 12:49:26 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm looking into this civic. Any problems i should be aware of? The car has 162K so not too bad for a 1999. The car looks stock, except for maybe a short shifter and some coloured interior pieces. What kind of price should I be looking at? The CBB says the average selling price is $5200. I will obviously get the car checked by my mechanic, cause these cars usually don't stay stock (hoping it is).

Have always wanted to get a manual, but never had the guts. I do know how to drive manual, i occsaionaly drive my bros' car which is a 5spd. I would have to teach the gf, since she doesn't know. Is this a good car to learn on? If there's anything else i should know about, please do share!

Thanks for the help!

Cars like these are more than likely to be abused. Also, expect HIGH insurance rates. Civics are easy to learn stickshift on (easy, smooth shifter and light clutch).
Mine: 2004 Acura TSX
Family: 2005 Honda Odyssey EX, 2006 BMW 330i

I got on online quote from my insurance company and it's about the same as i pay now ~$80/M, so that's not a problem. I know this was their 'high-performance' trim, but is the fuel economy about the same or just slightly higher?

Good to know that they're easy for 1st timers. She wants to learn, but is afraid.

Thanks

I used to owe a 2000 SiR. Great car, easy to drive, smooth shifting.
The car is overall very reliable except the rear brakes need regular maintenance or they tend to seize up. The engine is know to leak or burn oil at around 160 K. I  always used to use synthetic oil and never had any issues with leaking. (Apparently if the car does leak oil the first thing to try is switching back to regular oil.) The car has a 8000 red line and I would regularly take it there and never had any issue. Have the car looked over by a trusted mechanic but more or less the car is well build and can handle much abuse and keep ticking.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.
