Moving to Ontario
« on: July 12, 2011, 03:22:19 pm »
From London UK, I'm obviously going to need a carand a new licence, what are the first few things I need to do after that? I've changed cars before but never while changing country

So, if anyone can give me some pointers, that would be great. Thanks.

You get your social Insurance number/card from the Feds shortly after arriving.  A Permanent Resident card from the Feds ( assuming you are immigrating). I don't know how long that takes.
Your D/L from the Province they will take your UK licence and issue you a full Ont licence provided that you have held the UK licence for more than a year.

Then find a car and get insurance.  Ideally your car insurance Co in the UK will be one that does business here... there are some. Aviva comes to mind. A statement from your UK Co may or may not get better rates here... but be prepared for Insurance to be expensive.  Note that you pay sales tax on 2nd hand cars here  at 13%.

After you have been in Canada for 3 months you then get a Provincial health card.  For the 1st three months there are two possibilities. 1) your employer will cover your health stuff 2) better have some private health insurance.   I came so many years back and was a healthy 29 year old that I don't remember what happened.   Turbo Bob here on the forum will know.

Every spring you fill out the income tax form.

That's it  with the Gov until you become a citizen

Aviva will probably be expensive. They deal more with fleet insurance when it comes to vehicles. :)

I would imagine the big insurance companies (TD, RBC, StateFarm, AllState etc.) will not treat you as a new driver.

License and Registration (from Service Ontario) and Insurance. For insurance, you can go through an Insurance Broker who will browse other providers and give you the best rate for a small markup. Or, you can shop independently. A good source is to look online through Kanetix. Enter your details and browse the results. If you plan on buying a vehicle from a dealer in Ontario, they will assist you in this process.

Lunar, I'm from the UK too but 43 years ago so I won't be of any use to you here.  Best advice I can give if you're looking for a car - read up on the Etching & Nitrogen thread up top of this sub forum.  I'm not aware of a dealer that is not tied up in this.

Firstly, if you're a drving enthusiast you're on the wrong forum. This forum is for admirers of leatherette and sweet sweet soft touch plastics.

OK, you will be able to drive on your UK licence for about 6 months I think, so no hurry. (obviously check this)  Then after that you just go an fill in some forms and you can just swap your UK licence for a Canadian one, given that we are such great drivers an all.  Service Ontario is where you need to go:
http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/index.htm

I looked into buying a used car when I arrived, and ended up getting one from a dealer just because they knew all the paperwork and I didn't.  Either way you will need to probably pay upfront or have some sort of guarantor as you won't have a credit history.  One thing I did do was bring evidence of my 5yrs no claims from the UK, that helped me get a decent insurance rate for a new immigrant, which can be expensive.

Basically bring every piece of paperwork possible that shows you are a good driver and of good credit (Equifax report) and it will make your life (and the move) easier.
