But riding without a helmet is akin to walking in that same thunderstorm carrying a 10 foot tall metal rod.  Sure, you aren't likely to get struck by lighting, by why increase the chance that it COULD happen?

Your analogy is flawed . Riding without a helmet doesn't increase your chances of getting in an accident .

As a matter of fact, I would rather be struck by lightning than be obsessed with safety the way some people are .
That way of thinking is totally foreign to me .

Before I crashed my motorcycle I had been riding my bicycle and have a helmet similar to Wolverine's above. After wearing a motorcycle helmet I was starting to wonder if this little thing would do much in an accident. It seems that unless the impact was directed right at the top of the head, that it would provide very little protection. I imagined the side of my head hitting the pavement and had visions of this thing just rolling on my skull leaving me with no protection. I had even started to look at bike/skate type helmets as they seem to provide much more protection. Any comments from the helmet wearers?

What about one of those full face mountain bike helmets?

Here's Bell's lineup...seems some of them offer more side protection than others...

Full face helmets are the pinnacle of protection, the problem is the weight, around 1kg. For downhill it isn't a big problem since you don't spend too much time on the bike, but it would be painfull to use on a 4 hour XC ride.

I was in a bit of a fog the other morning on my cycle commute and realized I had forgotten my helmet and glasses in the garage. Though I was a km from home I turned around as it just didn't feel "right" and was distracting. I just don't understand why anyone would not wear a helmet - even if they weren't planning on getting in an accident!  ::)
